Why are the evs so Spartan inside?

because somewhere early on "they" decided that EV meant they had to look hi-tech and futuristic. And then there are Tesla's sales figures... so copy cat designs.

The buttons and finishing touches look nicer and have better detail. The gear selector looks more refined. And yeah, the quilted leather looks waaay nicer but I understand if it doesn't look sporty.

I always believed the minor costs it takes to use soft touch plastics is worth the overall upgraded feel of the cabin. Every car review mentions when the buttons feel plasticky or cheap. I remember when I first sat in a vw and touched the velvety plastic door pulls and thinking man this feels nice.

And I hope manufacturers start phasing out the shiny black (dusty scratchy) plastic trend. yuck. Even Tesla has a model 3 update now that gets rid of that for matte.

Doesn’t make it right though. At some point (likely when prices drop so that those not in tech can readily afford one) the current trend will likely fade. At least that’s my hope.

I have to say that when I sat in the car, I was disappointed in how the knurled volume knob felt. I didn't like the feel of the knob material, plastic vs metal or it's "resistance/feel" while being turned. I was hoping this was an item that would be improved from a pre-production unit and a finished product. I tend to agree that sometimes the small things make a big difference. This is something that will get a lot of usage and it would be nice if it felt substantial.

I have to add after what I wrote above, that is a nit from my time in the vehicle. However, I was hugely impressed with the appearance and quality of the interior. Everything for the most part was soft touch, the dashboard had clean lines and looked great, with the speaker bar, the nicely integrated vents under it and soft touch material under the vents. It looks and feels very high quality. I mentioned the handles that open the door from the interior are a revelation. Best ever. The impression in the car is not stark. It is comfortable and complies with form follows function, everything in its place. Nothing extraneous.

All of that is nice to have and looks great, but weighs something. More weight = less efficiency.
