Hey, very random question: I received the Tesla charging adapter for my Mach e, but I'm traveling in a different EV next week (Kia EV9).

Can I use the adapter at a Tesla Super Charging station even without the FordPass app? Can I pay directly to Tesla? Or will this not work?

Any guidance would be great. Thanks!

Kia’s don’t have Supercharger access, so it won’t work with that. If you had a Rivian or GM EV, then it would.

The adapter is a “dumb” passive adapter with no communications electronics in it. It will work with any CCS1 EV as long as they are approved to charge on Superchargers by Tesla.

Billing will be handled by the other automakers app/charging account or with the Tesla app.

Kia is not on the approved list yet. I think some people said they have had success using the Tesla app and selecting Hyundai as the car brand but I wouldn’t rely on that. Maybe test it locally first before leaving on the trip.

Once a vehicle is approved, you can initiate charging by using the Tesla app OR FordPass. FordPass doesn't care what vehicle is charging, only the Tesla SuperCharger does.

Yes- if you subscribe to the Tesla app or initiate charging on it. But you must have plug and charge turned off to get the Tesla discount if you’ve subscribed.

Tesla and Kia/Hyundai shutdown access once they saw the videos of those few Kia ev owners charging at a SC. Kia and Hyundia don't have access to SCs at the moment, per Tesla's website.

How is this managed? Is the VIN sent as part of the initialization protocol?

Not the VIN (I think it's a MAC address), but information about the vehicle and its capabilities is exchanged during the handshake before charging starts. Tesla can identify the type of vehicle from this information.

OP seems to think it will work, but I guess he'll find out.

@Mach-Lee is right. Let us know how it went if you did try it.

Tried tonight. DIdn't work, but I think it's because it's a Kia specifically and would likely work with other EV brands. I'm including information that I got elsewhere in case it's helpful to anyone.

Charging a KIA EV9 at a Tesla Supercharger requires following specific steps, as Tesla has opened some of its Superchargers to non-Tesla vehicles. Here’s how to do it:

Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Check Compatibility

  • Not all Tesla Superchargers are open to non-Tesla vehicles.
  • Use the Tesla App to find "Magic Dock" Superchargers or Superchargers that support CCS (Combined Charging System).
  • You can check Tesla's Supercharger map to confirm availability.
2. Download the Tesla App
  • If you haven’t already, download the Tesla App from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android).
  • Create a Tesla account if needed.
3. Add a Payment Method
  • In the Tesla App, navigate to "Charging" > "Manage Payment" and add a credit/debit card.
4. Arrive at a Compatible Supercharger
  • Park your KIA EV9 with the charging port aligned with the charger.
  • Ensure no other vehicles or obstacles block access.
5. Open the Tesla App & Start Charging
  1. Open the Tesla App.
  2. Select “Charge Your Non-Tesla” from the menu.
  3. Locate the charger in the app and select the correct stall number.
  4. Plug the Tesla connector into your EV9's charging port.
    • If using a Magic Dock, the CCS adapter is already attached.
    • If using a regular Tesla Supercharger, you'll need a Tesla to CCS adapter (if the charger doesn’t have a built-in one).
  5. Tap “Start Charging” in the app.
6. Monitor the Charging Session
  • The Tesla App will show the real-time charging status.
  • You can stop charging at any time via the app or by unplugging.
7. Stop Charging & Unplug
  1. End the session in the Tesla App.
  2. Unplug the charger from your EV9.
  3. Return the connector to the charging station.
8. Review the Payment
  • The Tesla App will charge your saved payment method.
  • Check the receipt in the app for session details.
Additional Notes:
  • Charging costs vary by location and may be higher for non-Tesla vehicles.
  • You may need a CCS to Tesla adapter for some stations.
  • Some Tesla Superchargers limit speeds for non-Tesla vehicles.

It didn’t work? No sh*t Sherlock. What are you doing? I don’t get it. You’ve been told that it’s not compatible per Tesla’s website. Tesla owns the stations and Tesla said that Kia’s and Hyundas aren’t able to use the superchargers at this point in time.

Why is this is so hard to understand? Bc some randos on YouTube tried it and it worked for like 2 days? You saw for yourself that it didn’t work and you’ve been told that it doesn’t work. Yet you come here and post a long post about the “tips” to get it to work?? I don’t understand. It doesn’t work at the moment. Just wait until Tesla authorizes it. Just stop dude! Sheesh!!!!

[shakes head]

Yes, it is a FACT that only makes that Tesla has authorized can charge there, no tricks or gimmicks will work. They may have for a short period, but then MORONS blasted it all over the internet and that was the end of that.

i didn't expect it to work. some of the folks above asked me to give it a shot and see if it worked and report back, so i did.

maybe you should take a xanax and calm down. it's going to be OK. your life was not impacted by anything that transpired here. check your blood pressure and call your doctor in the morning. good lord dude.
