My father-in-law has an arc welding setup in his pole barn at his place. It uses a 6-50 receptacle on a 50A circuit. WIll this adapter work with the Ford portable charger?

Make sure the adapter has a minimum wire size of 8AWG. Other than that, it should work fine. ??

If you already have the adapter, check the wire size and make sure it says it's at least 8AWG. If is says 10AWG, don't use it. The Ford portable charger runs at 32a so #8 wire is fine and #6 is even better if you have the option.

If you don't have the adapter and are going to order one, I wouldn't recommend buying one unless you can verify the wire size is #6 or #8. If it doesn't say what the wire size is, buy one that does.

I think that is a 15 amp plug for connecting a 50 amp RV to a standard 120v household receptacle. I doubt the plug will fit into his welder receptacle since typically has two slanted prongs for the hot wires.

No it just looks like that because you can't tell the size from a picture with no scale. It's a NEMA 6-50 like the OP Says. The adapter's neutral slot in the NEMA14-50 receptacle just won't have anything connected to it. That's ok in this application since EVSE doesn't use the neutral.

The 50 A plug has straight slots. A 30 A plug has slanted slots like a campground receptacle. Welders would use a plug standard compatible with their full load requirements.

If you blow up the image you can see where "N6-50P" is embossed on the plug head, near the larger flat prong. ??

Missed that. Last welder I had used a 10-30 plug. Have not encountered N6-50P. This should work fine since the charger doesn't need the neutral, just the two hots and the ground. I would check to see if the neutral in the 14-50R is connected to anything.

The Ford Portable Charger requires a ground connection. No ground and it will not work

Yep and it does not require a Neutral. The 6-50 provides everything except the Neutral. ?? Of course, dependent on how the adapter is wired, anything is possible. ?‍♂?

The one pictured does not have the neutral connected to anything. It should be fine for an EVSE, but don’t plug your RV into it.
