Going to visit old friends next week and want to add some miles before heading home that evening. He said I could probably plug in in the garage dryer outlet. He checked the circuit box and said the dryer has two 30 amp circuit breakers. Does that make the outlet a 60 amp outlet or is it still 30 amps? He's going to send me a picture of the outlet at least I would know if that would work. The breaker part I have no clue. Anyone know if this configuration is safe?

Thanks, Sam's Club is 2 miles from their house so we will make a little side trip. They will probably want to ride in Scarlet anyway so we'll spend 30 mins in Sam's and drive home happy.

240v circuits look like two breakers that are grouped together. It is really just one circuit.

The mobile charger will want to pull 32 amps ... too much for the 30 amp circuit breaker. It would need to be a 40 amp breaker. A car should not pull more than 80% of the breaker's capacity ... so 24 amps on a 30 amp breaker.

If you had a 24 amp mobile charger (such devices do exist) then you'd be set. Ideally ... it would be great if Ford would do a software update that lets us set the max rate of charge in the car to allow for safely charging on lower amp circuits.

You'll need to buy an EVSE designed for dryer outlets (below). The provided charger isn't compatible.

These will only work with newer 4-prong dryer outlets (after 1996), older 3-prong outlets do not have a ground and therefore can't be used.

It is a 14-50 female to 14-30 male adaptor. I have not tried it yet, but it should work. The EVSE that comes with the MME does fit into the female side of this. The reviews said that people have used this in a campground with the 30A receptacle, to charge their EV.

@Mach-Lee is correct. There's a reason these types of adapters will not ever be UL Listed or Intertek tested.

People using these successfully are likely charging older vehicles with smaller built-in chargers.

I have been using mine with no issues since I got my Mach-e two weeks ago. It’s on a 30a breaker and has not tripped once. It’s adds about 17mph.

That's a little concerning. I don't know what it's actually doing, but if it's drawing more than about 28 amps the breaker should eventually trip. If you have a faulty circuit breaker that doesn't trip on spec you're going to be damaging the wires.

It's possible the charger sees a huge voltage drop from overloading the circuit and cuts back the current, but this is definitely not something you should rely on to make an improper practice safe.

This is a case of "just because it works doesn't mean it's okay". I can drive just fine with only two lug nuts on my wheel but that's not a good idea either, eventually something could go wrong.
