It sets the bar for what the next gen Mach-E must match or exceed, imho.
I mean no, not really. As much as I like the Mach-E, Ford doesn’t play in the same ball field as BMW. Lincoln maybe.

I was thinking mainly in terms of efficiency, zonal architecture and charging speed.

Charging speed is a benefit of the 800V architecture on the BMW platform.

The next Ford EV platform will still be 400V. They have already announced the platform will use a zonal architecture.

Agreed. Ford will be lagging the industry in charging speed, unfortunately.

$60,000 MSRP is the sales price that’s being tossed around.

BMW says the dual motor iX3 will have dual motor AWD and 400kW peak charging on its 108kWh battery pack. Estimated 400 miles of EPA range and 10-80% in 20 minutes.

They are within industry normal for lower cost and mainstream vehicles.

No, they will not be on the bleeding edge of new technology but that’s not Ford’s mission.

At this stage Lincoln could disappear and be replaced with another ford trim level for what they currently offer :(.

Hyundai / Kia already moved to 800v at ford prices and while 400v is fine for entry level & city cars, if ford want to be competitive overall in the EV market going forward in this segment putting an suv / crossover top hat on CE1 doesn't cut it which unless it is priced very very cheap and even then for a lot of people range will be a determining factor.

As much as I like my mach-e its highway range isn't really good enough, when you get to 400 miles epa range, even taking into account how optimistic that can be for a vehicle this size and price point, it is going to make future vehicles in this segment regardless of how much cheaper in price point not very appealing, the same way 300 miles of range was the expected norm for a lot of people this could easily make 400 the new norm.

You are 100% correct. At $60k and the specs BMW is offering, it makes it a no-contest vs MME 4X at a similar price point.

E-GMP cars are about $5-10k more than the equivalent Mach-E trim. An Ioniq 5 Limited AWD is $59k MSRP. More than a Mach-E GT, much slower, and less range. The Ioniq 5N is like $69k with much less range than Mach-E GT. But yes it does charge faster if that’s an important factor for you.

Everyone else in the Mach-E class is still 400V. Including the upcoming Rivian R2. So while not the cutting edge, 400V far from being obsolete or not competitive.

Lots of good things in this BMW, but …

They put the charge port in the back right!? Can BMW’s use Superchargers?

$10k more is a big difference for most buyers.

And of course, it’s a BMW. You’re never going to find one with absolutely zero options at that $60k starting price. Start checking some boxes and it will likely be $70k reasonably equipped.

Specs are cool. But the front grill. I just don’t understand what these designers are thinking. It’s already entirely unnecessary, but is “cosmetic” the right word when you make something uglier? I guess people get terrible cosmetic surgery all the time, so maybe.
Seriously…… that grill design seems to be universally hated and yet BMW keeps sticking with it. Are people in that organization scared to speak up?

AI could make a thousand different better looking renderings in 30 seconds.

Like who designed the BMW XM?? First one I saw in wild I couldn’t take my eyes off of it…. For all the wrong reasons-

I was looking at an i4 the other day. Why? Well it was parked 2 spots over from my Mach-e. There was nothing between the two cars.

Anyway, I looked at the grill and realized it was the least offensive of their grills. And still incredibly ugly.

Doubling down on bad aesthetics doesn’t make them good.
