I was having issues opening my trunk from the outside using the button next to the license plate. Had my key fob and PaaK and still it wouldn’t open. When I press the unlock button on the key fob I can open it using the button. Made an appointment and took it to the dealer, this is what they did…
They checked it out and told me it was not the keyless entry antenna receiver for the trunk area (DS7T-15603-CA). When the tech performed a CMDTC self test he retrieved codes U2000:15 and U200F:15 in RFA. Cleared and retested and no codes came back. He checked for related software updates and found a BCM and RFA updates. He updated those and now it works just the way it’s supposed to. So if anyone is also having this problem it might not be the antenna receiver, it might just be a software update to that receiver. All covered under warranty.

I had the same problem this winter and I blamed it on the cold.
When it go warmer it started working.
At some point it stopped again.
I have had several updates and now it is working again.

Great to hear that your Ford dealer took the time to investigate this issue for you and made the necessary repairs. Thanks for the heads up to look out and recognize similar issues!

Well after they fixed it, it’s doing the same thing again. Don’t know why but I have an appointment with my Ford dealer. I’ll update this thread once I know why it keeps reoccurring.

Got an appointment for August 18th and when I got to the dealer it worked fine. Go figure. So there was nothing for them to do.

Forward to August 31st and it did it again so I got an appointment for today, September 15th. Got to the dealer and showed the service advisor exactly what it was doing and that it was doing it again. They took the car back to the service bay and the tech could not replicate the problem. It worked for him. What the hell? Seems like the car knows when it’s at the Ford dealer and will act correctly. This is the tech notes…
CUSTOMER STATES THE TRUNK DOOR IS NOT OPENING WHEN PRESSING BUTTON WHILE VEHICLE IS LOCKED. WAS WORKING BEFORE, ALL THE OTHER DOORS OPEN WHEN PRESSING BUTTONS. PLEASE CHECK AND ADVISE. Unable to duplicate concern. Checked for applicable tsb’s, gsb’s & ssm’s- none apply. Preformed CMDTC self test - retrieved U200E:15 in RFA, U2016:47 in PSCM, U053B:00 in PCM. Clear and retest - pass. Checked BCM pid BATT_SOC - 81%. Checked for related SW updates - none found. Checked GTAC for similar reports - none found. Performed ’PINPOINT TEST A: BLUETOOTH ANTENNA #3, #5, #11 CIRCUIT FAULTS’ A1: No - ‘The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by invalid signal from the bluetooth.’ Requested additional information from service advisor, requested assistance from shop foreman - determined npf at this time due to unable to verify concern.

Anyone know what could be going on?

Did they use the same key fob that wasn’t working before? Did they do the recall update?

Perhaps you are in an area of signal interference when it doesn’t work, or did not have the fob close enough (<3 feet from liftgate).

I’m sure they used the same key fob otherwise how would it work. I don’t know how I would be in a signal interference area when it occurs everywhere I go and the key fob is in my pocket and PaaK in my right hand.

So just to make sure, you're not leaving the car in drive when you are trying to open it? Does it beep when you press the button? And you also don't have another fob or PAAK inside the car confusing it?

If the car is in park, you only have one fob or PAAK nearby or in the car, and it's within 3 feet of the trunk, then it should work. If not, then I might suspect the button is going bad due to wearing out or water ingress.

When you press the physical button, do the tail light flash yellow?

No the car is off and the doors locked. No beeps when I press the button. No other fob or PaaK in the car.

You’re right it should work but it does not. The funny thing is it works when the tech takes a look at it. Am I doing something wrong or does the car have a mind of its own?

So when this happens to me. I just use the fob button to open the trunk. Shut the trunk and lock the car . The button seems to start working. No idea what causes this behavior to start.
When you say lock the car, do you mean with the fob or just walk away and let it lock on its own? I’ve done as you said but walked away and it still doesn’t work the next time I try to open it.

My habit is to either use the fob or touch the lock icon on one of the doors. I dont really leave the back of the car before trying the physical button and my phone is usually in my pocket too. This is definitely a bug so who knows which detail resets whatever needs to get reset.
