The Clean Power Alliance allows Los Angeles & Ventura County residents to choose renewable energy sources for their electricity needs. They just started offering an "EV SmartCharge" program that would allow for $260 worth of savings in the first year by charging at off-peak hours.

To sign up, you have to check your vehicle's eligibility, and Ford is one of the only EV makers not listed.

I emailed them to ask why, and they replied "Unfortunately, we are currently incompatible with the Ford due to software limitations."

The app they use to control your charging pings Ford’s website repeatedly, far, far more often than is genuinely necessary. Use of the app will get your account locked. They also get your log in formation and could access your Ford Account information. In addition, the app maker has declined to work with Ford through their api programs.

Very interesting, thank you. Also interesting that every other manufacturer was ok with that. Out of curiosity, how did you know that info?

Same as in Mass, cant use the program because of the poor design of the App, not the Ford side.

It’s not the first thread on this.

As near as I can tell, many electric companies use the same app with just a different skin is all. I’m sure there are others though. FWIW (answer: not much), we’re in the same boat out here. Off peak here though are 9 am through 5 pm daily.

To be fair, I’ve read that working with Ford and their api program is rather frustrating. I’ll take the folks word for it.

I eventually decided to upgrade my home charger (original was 10 years old and only 32a) so went with a Grizzl-e that would get me into that off peak program. Well 3 months later that charger is no longer supported so still not in the program.

We have a somewhat similar program here through PG&E, but IIRC it connects to the EVSE, not the OEM. I've not signed up for it for various reasons, but I'm pretty sure that's how it works. I took a look at the CPA link the OP provided and it appears that you can use the program via your smart EVSE (assuming you have a compatible one). Not sure if you'd also need to connect your car as well...

Our program in Ontario, Canada also connects to the EVSE. We participate via our ChargePoint Home Flex. It activates only on select high-demand days, for a few hours. You can get it for your a/C too, if you have a compatible IOT thermostat.

Same in NY (Westchester) however I have an Emporia EVSC and thankfully it is now compatible. Check to see if there is an eligible charger.

In SE Michigan, the utility works with Ford, BMW, Tesla, Wallbox, ChargePoint, and Emporia. For Ford, they can prevent charging for a few off-peak hours, or force charging during peak hours. Currently $60 per vehicle, was $100. For Ford, they go through Ford to reset charging limit lower or reset charging hours. Haven't seen an override message in years, and you can override them.

I have my chargers set to prevent the peak charging.

We have exceeded $600, maybe $700.

The crappy power company here in Florida wants to have your Fordpass login information in order to receive a tiny discount for charging off hours.

No thanks. As someone who has worked in in IT network security for more than 25 years, I would never give my login information to a third party.
