Can I buy one there and drive it across the border?

Probably, but as soon you import it into the US you'd be hit with the US' 100% import tariff.
Maybe if I have a friend that lives there buy it and keep it registered there?

At the rate we’re going in the States, living with a friend in Canada may soon qualify as a contingency plan.

That all falls apart if you get pulled over, or even crossing in to the US from Canada the first time. I once borrowed my aunt's car and drove it from Seattle to Vancouver and was read the riot act by the Canadian Border guys who said basically I was importing a car in to Canada, because it was not registered in my name. Different when its a rental, but if its a private vehicle you are importing it. He said "just don't get pulled over..."

Ha, once Greenland gets 'murcanized ... Canada's next. You can keep it as 'settler's effects"

In exchange for concessions on canola and related products, we will now allow up to 49,000 Chinese EVs into Canada, tariff free, per year:

https://insideevs.com/news/784657/china-ev-tariff-canada/
Please pardon my ignorance. I know Chinese EV makers have been making inroads into other countries, but I haven't seen much concerning ownership issues. So I have questions. I didn't read anything in the article about a support infrastructure. As we all know, cars - EVs included, of course - wear out, break down and suffer 'glitches' in electronics. Where will these imports be sold, are there Chinese dealerships in Canada offering full on-site services? Are, or will, their vehicles' diagnostic and repair procedures be available to repair shops? What is the warranty? How will repairs and subsequent repair parts be made available? It's one thing to buy new vehicle, it's quite another to own one.
