1 Pedal Driving sometimes doesn't engage and break?

Hey guys, I noticed something like 2-3 times when driving with 1 Pedal Driving enabled.
Sometimes it just doesn't break when I release the accelerator and I have to engage the break manually (and it's less smooth because I have to break harder).

What's the issue here? Does it sometimes shit the bed? if so it's a worry.
I noticed that it may have happened when the car was going downhill, would that be the reason?

I found that when I plan my stops (start decelerating before approaching the stop) that it performs really well. If I've underestimated the distance a bit, I need to tap the physical brakes. All in all, though, it works like other one-pedal drives that I've been in before.

You can try breaking sooner and that will help. With 1PD enabled....."breaking sooner" really means lifting off the accelerator sooner and more smoothly. If you abruptly lift off the accelerator then the car may blend in the friction brakes but it might also just attempt to slow the vehicle with regeneration. If you quickly move over to the brake pedal then the vehicle may interpret this as a panic braking event and give you friction brakes now.

Not sure about the downhill events. When I was using 1PD and crested a hill, my natural instinct was to lift off the accelerator and I think the friction brakes blended in and that wasn't ideal for me. I bet if I practiced more than I could keep that from happening.

My first month of driving will be with 1PD turned off so I can learn how effective the regen is for various scenarios. I switched from a very light to a very heavy BEV so it is a whole new learning curve for me. The second month will be with 1PD turned on and we'll see how I do. I will be looking at the thermal effects on the battery pack as well as overall impact to range (if any). It is nice to have the ability to adjust the various settings to fit our individual driving styles. ?

To add to what Greg said - if you are coming to a stop and have cruise control set use the cancel button don't hit the brake pedal. I've noticed it can be hard to gauge the braking force if you hit the brake slightly immediately after letting off the accelerator or cancelling cruise control. You'll learn how the system works over time and get better at naturally stopping and judging stops.

Lastly, while 1pd does use friction brakes I don't think it uses them except at low speeds (sub 5mph), or in the case of wheel lockup where ABS needs to engage. Just like how cruise control will only use them if it has to due to needing to press the brakes harder than regen will provide, or lockup where abs is required. Though I need to test this 100% while watching the live data stream.

Are you turning the cruise control on? Not hitting set, but the main on/off button? The other day I did that and realized it was also setting the cruise control at that time. Different behavior than my other cars.

oh, my experience is with city driving at 30 mph without cruise control engaged.
like there's a car in front of me stopped at a light/stop sign, I'm approaching and release the "gas pedal" fully and the car coast instead of braking.
Like I say it happened like twice and I'm wondering why.

Next time it happens, go to the driving modes screen to insure that 1-pd is still on. If it is, there may be a software issue with your car. You can switch to using 'L' mode on the shifter until you get it figured out.

I agree completely. When I plan accordingly, OPD works great. I've never had it fail to engage.

what live data stream, and how are you watching it?
I would LOVE to see live data on power (kw) output/regen while driving!

FORScan beta that hasn't been released yet (I think it hasn't at least).

Only works on a windows PC currently but hopefully they update the app in the coming month(s). I have tested it and it does work but haven't spent much time since it is cumbersome to use a laptop while driving. I need to grab one of my 8" windows tablets and use one of those instead.

You can watch battery current in Amps while driving, however it does not show kW I'm pretty sure. You would need to calculate that yourself by multiplying current and voltage together.

I live on a hill. I noticed that L mode (in non-one-pedal driving) doesn't do anything when the car is charged to 100% and goes downhill for a while shortly after leaving home. I only charged to 100% for a road trip, and I only tried L one or two times. So my observation was one off. I felt that this might be by design, and wasn't alarmed.

Maybe your issue is related?

ooohhhhhh, I'd love a copy!
Is this via ODB2 port, or some other data port? I am wondering how this data stream is being aquired?

I've felt this on occasion where I accelerate at the beginning of the block but then have to suddenly stop due to a traffic light or other vehicle. Had to apply brakes as there wasn't enough time for 1PD to engage.

i am having same issue. It is not planning the stop. I need to know how to plan. either i stop 30 ft back, or next time have to slam on the breaks. Mine is in the shop (since Friday morn)and that is one of the issues. NOt sure if it is all related but was getting lots of errors. They have traced it to a module, that is on national back order. Trying to get one from the assembly line. It was fun for 3 days. Such a long rant to say the OPD driving is broken on my car too.
