I would think you would lose the ability to use the built-in gimbal of the magnet mount to orient it the way you want it. If you mount straight to the plate, it's at that angle pointing perpendicular to the plate. What if you just mount the charger to the plate (without magnet mount)?
Max USB Type C power without PD is 15 watts (5 volts x 3 amps). The magsafe cable charges at 15W, and Apple recommends their 20w adapter when you purchase it. I would assume the USB ports in the Mach E are not nearly that high. The maximum USB standard before you get to Power Delivery is like 10 watts, and it would be pretty extraordinary if Ford made those USB ports support PD and not advertise the hell out of it
Fair enough, I was looking at the previous genMax USB Type C power without PD is 15 watts (5 volts x 3 amps).
It can charge at lower wattages; you just need 20W to maximize the 15W charging capability of MagSafe.Fair enough, I was looking at the previous gen
The magsafe charges the phone at 15 watts, and it being wireless I suspect there is some loss. Apple has an 18w adapter, but the official adapter you're supposed to use with Magsafe is 20w, so I still think that it's just not powerful enough
That makes sense. In that case it's definitely the magnet mount that is interfering IMO.I would think you would lose the ability to use the built-in gimbal of the magnet mount to orient it the way you want it. If you mount straight to the plate, it's at that angle pointing perpendicular to the plate.
Thank you for the feedback. I will definitely test with the magnetic mount and MagSafe charger when I get mine. I really appreciate you joining in here.Hi All,
We want to do what we can here to help. Others have used the combination we recommend to bring their MagSafe charger and a dash mount together. Our magnetic holders are quite strong, however, and that is a good thing for holding a device securely onto a mount. Even so, it is a concern of ours when it comes to having an effect on the MagSafe charger. A quite a few customers have used this combination and most have been happy with how the combination has worked. A couple customers, however, have had the same issue with the charger no longer working while on the mount.
We want to do what we can to remedy this for all who use the MagSafe charger. We are not convinced that the MagSafe charger alone will have enough strength to hold the iPhone 12 to the charger while undergoing some spirited driving. Falling or flying phones are what we are trying to avoid creating in the vehicles and that is why our magnetic holders are as strong as they are. The challenge we are working on is getting that best combination that will hold the phone secure and still not create any troubles with the phone charging. While most customers have not had any issue we want to make it so no customers are going to have any issues with this. We are working on things here and are always open to suggestions and comments from the drivers who have the real life experience with how things are behind the wheel.
Again, I want to let everyone know that I am not here for advertising. We want to do our best to make the best device mounts for the Mach e. The best way for us to do this is to listen to what you owners want to tell us. We are grateful to listen and do what we can to help.
Hey @A-Tach Steven, how can i get hold of the adapter? i'm thinking i can mount my magsafe directly on a ball joint and it will work.Thank you Methorian,
We have an adapter that should work with the iphone 12 holder in your link. Most holders use a 17 mm ball and socket gimble. For any Mach e drivers who already have a iPhone 12 holder that holds strong enough for them, there is an adapter available to attach that holder onto the mount designed for the Mach e.
That sounds great for those that want/need it!Thank you Methorian,

here is what i have so far - a 3d printed receptacle (flange?) on the original a-tach ball joint. It's printed in PLA so i'm worried it will not survive the summer... but strong doublestick tape to the 3rd party magsafe charger (which has surprisingly strong magnets), seem to work - of course YMMV, i've only driven it 2 times after installation..Hey @A-Tach Steven, how can i get hold of the adapter? i'm thinking i can mount my magsafe directly on a ball joint and it will work.
