Very sorry to hear this. Glad that you are OK. Vehicles can be replaced even if totaled. And we're getting close to a totaled vehicle, which is why GAP insurance for Options shouldn't be dismissed out of hand. (If the vehicle was totaled you'd likely be underwater by quite a bit).
$16k isn't close to totaling an MME. Maybe double that and you might be able to talk them into it.

Glad everyone is ok but I am really glad I went with shadow black. First grabber blue and now white are in accident's.
IIRC There was a Carbonized Gray or Infinite Blue in a crash a while back, too.

There‘s not enough information to make that assumption. With 30% down, it wouldn’t be close to underwater even if it was totaled (which it’s not).

I'm not addressing this particular situation since the vehicle doesn't seem to be totaled, though it's also true that until you start taking it apart you never know.

The reason GAP makes sense is that with all the subsidies you lose $10k-$15K the first day you own it. In CA it would be $4K from CA plus $7.5K from the federal government plus $2.5K from Ford plus whatever depreciation would occur plus sales tax. You could of course put 30% down, and yes you would then not need GAP, but putting so much down with Options seems like an odd choice. In fact part of the appeal of Options is that you can put very little down and then use GAP to protect from this type of risk.

The point would be that GAP can make sense if using Options. Should be no argument abut that.

I highly doubt that is accurate. I can't believe an insurance company would attempt to deduct tax credits or state rebates you may or may not have received/been eligible for from the value of the vehicle.

How exactly you would lose the $10K-$15K? You already collected (or will collect) that as part of the purchase.

The primary reason for using Options for me is that if the car's value plummets during the first 3-4 years, or if turns out to be crap, I have a relatively painless way out.

GAP insurance always was and is a scam. Its primary purpose is to protect the lender and generate revenue for the dealer. The way to tell it's a scam is that the dealer is pushing it, along with nitrogen in the tires and scotch guarding seats, and undercoating, and wheel locks, etc.

When "totaling" the car, insurance company don't care about about credits/rebates/etc. They care about replacement value.

Why? Putting more down means borrowing less. Everyone's circumstances are different, but I'm not seeing why that would be an odd choice.

Yes it was drivable. I actually drove it 40 miles to home. However, the insurance adjuster was adamant that I NOT drive it due to the front damage and possible instability of the airbag sensors.

Dude I would lose my shit if that happened to mine. that lady is going to have a hell of an insurance premium.
How did that even come up? Did she just casually bring it up?

"I'm so sorry. I was so shaken up from having just creamed a Tesla 10 minutes ago that I didn't even see the stop sign." ?

Yes but clearly this situation was beyond the limits of the assistance system.
Screen Shot 2021-05-13 at 8.20.26 PM.png
This specifies "oncoming traffic." Having had two cross-traffic near-misses this week alone, I can report with confidence that the car provides no assistance whatsoever. (These were from the left-side and my fault at a specific intersection near home. I'm blaming my seat placement and the fat A-pillar for blocking my view. Caveat auriga!
