Was afraid to open it - my husband was convinced that charging the car makes the meter spin like a top..... Drum roll please - we had 3% lower usage than last year. Which seems to mean that my son's MineCraft server, that is now with him at college, uses less electricity than the car. But here are the #s I ran for the 550 miles I have put on the car this month (yeah, I work from home and don't get out much)

Gas -would have cost $81 with my previous car at $2.80 avg per gallon

JuiceBox app says I charged a total of 167 KWH - this is 18% of my usage for the month. 18% of my electric bill = $34.

Savings $47

And I am in CT - which I believe has the highest electricity rates in the 48 contiguous states. Assuming my math holds up - this makes me very happy..

Presumably your electric bill includes fixed part and variable part that goes up and down with your usage. If you used the total bill to calculate cost of charging your car, you are actually overestimating it. So you real cost of charging is even less.

Agreed - I'm an accountant not an actuary so I kept the calculation simple ??

I got my car in February, and have been intentionally driving over 1000 miles a month. We are getting solar, and our electric company typically won't let you hook up more solar capacity than you used over the prior year. They make exceptions if you add an electric car, so I wanted to make sure to up our usage so it was easier to justify the increased panel capacity to cover the car charging.

Anyway, typically the winter months our electric bill is pretty low and my wife had a fit when she opened the electric bill and it said that our electric use had gone up 40%. BUT, when I pointed out that the actual cost was $20 LESS than I would have paid for gas she calmed down.

When we finally get the solar system installed and start collecting the energy credits from NJ she will be much happier. The rate from PSE&G is around $0.18 per kwh, but with the energy credits and cost of panels combined we'll be paying $0.10 per kwh. She'll be much happier then :)

My electric bill is almost the same. Our socialist city government put free L2 chargers, so I get enough free juice for a day while walking my dogs.
Bender gets free juice at socialist grocery store (Whole Foods) and later in June when I start going back to work, at the office.

This is good to know. I am in CT too so know the high cost of electricity and just got a Mach-e. Still haven’t figured out how to track usage but hope to figure it out soon, lol.

Glad to hear you're moving forward with the panels. Did you select someone for your install or trying to get your usage up first?

We had a similar issue with wanting more capacity than our current usage when we installed solar in 2018. We're in Mercer County, PSE&G territory, and there was an alternate usage form the contractor could complete to justify a larger system. The intent is for situations, like yours, where past usage may not be a good estimate of future. Ours was approved without issue and to date we've been overproducing by about 20%. We've got 2 young kids and the MME on the way so we knew our usage was only going up when we moved forward with getting solar installed.

You're not going to regret going solar. I wish we had done it even sooner.

I'm from NJ... In NC we pay 0.12, so we saw a substantial drop in our power bill, even with a heat pump doing all the work.

Rhode Island has the highest price due to a wonderful off shore wind disaster.. 0.25/kW. Congrats on the great bill. EVs typically average 50-70 MPG when the actual cost of gas is figured in.

When you are charging the car you can check the app. While charging there is an option to see the raw data such as energy added and distance added. I also check the electric meter before and after charging and make an assumption for the average household use (mine is about 1kW/hr). Also the information on the "Trips" screen can be reset with each charge for either Trip 1, Trip 2 or both to get the total miles traveled. Additionally I use Gas Buddy to check local gas prices. If you, or anyone, would like a spreadsheet with the calculations send me a private message and I will send you a copy of what I use.

? You’re still paying something… just your non-EV neighbors are paying more for it.?

? Tier 2 rates for PG&E (Parts of SF Bay Area and “Northern” CA) are $.31/kWH, which most SFH get to, so EV charging is always on top of that. EV rates here do allow for time of use pricing, off-peak gets to .18, peak is close to .50 in the summer, .37 in the winter.
