I really like the Tesla Tech, but after viewing this, it's giving me a moment of pause. Elon has single handedly pushed the market forward, but is there a cost? I've been also watching Mobileye's technology, which Tesla used at first until they had a falling out and Elon took the technology in house. Both are advancing quickly, but only one is say its full self driving.

I'm looking at the Model Y and the Mach-e, the Tech in the MY is solid and refined, they have had the last 10 years to build from, where the MME is just beginning, I'm reading the forum, on the issues early vehicles had, growing pains they encountered. With Ford being so close to the vest, its hard to see what they have in mind for the OTA updates, they state your care will be better than when you purchased it, but Tesla has set the example of continually adding features, some silly, but others "cool".

Is the underdog, funny how Ford has become the underdog in the EV space, the better bet, and live through the growing pains?

After watching entire video (I had the time) it is touting the necessity of an active driver monitoring system like the Infrared camera on the Mach E. Did not mention Mach E assuming it probably had not been released yet.

53 minutes?? It's there a TLDW version?
not really, no, not if you want to get the point of it (I watched it myself)... I could tell you that he proves that the Tesla system is actually more likely to cause an accident than less (that Tesla basically does a "lies, damn lies, and statistics" thing here), that active driver monitoring is necessary, points out "Musk Time", etc., but it's really worth the full watch because you're not really getting the point from me just saying these things.

the explanation for why Tesla's claims of "safer than without" is nonsense is in particular really interesting but he explains it about as succinctly as possible while being complete.

It's a waste of 53 minutes.

If you want to learn about the state of the art and have a bit of background in modern NN-style "AI", you are better off watching the video of Tesla's AI day presentations. There you can hear about current development from actual experts.

Wrong and wrong.

But at least I have another one for the list now,

I watched it and I agree with pretty much all his findings. I can only imagine how demoralizing it can be for the Tesla engineers to never meeting some of Elon's goals.

I sampled enhanced auto pilot for 3yrs. There are some improvements that took place gradually, but some things never worked, and others got worse. Here are some off the top of my head.

Summon never worked. I have your very typical garage, concrete garage floor and asphalt driveway. When the car sees where the concrete meets the asphalt, the car stops and proceeds to close my garage door, with the trunk in the way of the closing garage door. No, I never dared to sample "smart summon".

Phantom braking was still a thing with 2021.4.12, when I last had the car. There is this particular curve on my back road, a bit of a blind curve going downhill. I always liked to enable auto pilot on that stretch of back roads whenever there's an update, to see how it behaved. The car used to sound the alarm and tells me to take over immediately when it tries to navigate that curve. Can't remember exactly when, probably just over a year ago, it no longer sounds the alarm and the car would seemingly just drive straight off the cliff if I didn't yank on the steering wheel to take over. I tried it multiple times on 4.12 and it never improved.

After all this time, the auto wipers still do not worked properly. Sometimes it comes on for no reason, sometimes it doesn't come on during a down pour. I suspect it never will since there's no proper IR rain sensor. Same goes for the auto headlights. It constantly goes on and off during the day under bright blue skies. Tesla (or Elon) don't like any dedicated sensors to perform a specific function and really bet the farm on cameras. Towards the end of the video when he talked about driver monitoring, I can probably conclude that they wish they'd have spent a couple of bucks on some IR emitter for the interior driver facing camera. If they did, they probably can cobble up a driver monitoring system that works day *and* night.

That must have been why a Model Y was flashing its brights straight at me while I was driving through a left turn at the intersection and they were waiting at the red on the opposite side. That spot they were waiting at was under a shade tree. That's my guess.

What people don't realize is they a transferring the liability to the car owner. Testing of level 3 and higher has specific requirements that vary by state. That's also why they say it is a level 2 system on paper, but market as "full self driving" or a "robotaxi" in the future. If they claimed it was level 3 or higher they would need to meet the state regulations for testing, or possibly the owner of the car would have to.

Mahmood was the guest on the most recent episode of the Autonocast podcast. I highly recommend subscribing if you want to learn more about vehicle automation, the players in that industry, and the differences between driver assistance and driving automation.
