That is the point. After owning Mitsubishi Outlander for 18 years I don't understand it. The trunk tray still looks good. From time to time I just take it out, vacuum well and that's it.
And if I'd destroy it somehow, I would probably find another one available to buy somewhere.
I absolutely understand the value of the floor mats, but the trunk liner seems like a ballast to me
So really what you're saying is you don't understand how other people use their vehicles?

I mean, I would show you what my liners look like after a few months before I clean them but you'll just have to visualize it and understand that you're in the very minor minority in terms of how people use their SUVs.

There's a bunch of grainy white stuff I need to vacuum out today - no idea what it is or its origin.
Good idea. Start posting now in case the officers find your "white stuff", and you can have plausible deniability about how it got there.

It's a (relatively) free country. If you want a liner, buy it and move on. If you don't, that's fine, too.
This is too trivial to try and convince each other one way or the other.
Exactly. It is just a discussion. I don't like putting the stuff that I don't need in my car. So I'm trying to decide whether I need it or not. May be somebody else would also use this thread for educated decision.
By now we have identified the following cases when the liner is really must have:
- if you transport all sort of shit from home depot and other construction stores
- if you have a dog

No questions about floor mats. I'm talking specifically about trunk liner

I have one because I think it's easier to clean. I do think it depends on what you use the vehicle for however. I think the spillage comments are kinda funny, because anything more than a little bit of liquid and it's gonna end up on my lift gate when I do 0-60 in 3.5...

That being said I think the biggest down side to them is that they are slippery and stuff moves all over the place back there... Then you need a cargo net.

So in partial agreement with @Rt1AWD that they can be pointless and annoying to some people.

I was just at Aldi this morning for a small set of groceries...some fruit was in an open cardboard box. If I didn't have a liner that had grip my box would be sliding all over the back.

So....add going to stores and wanting to put something in the back without it sliding all over the place every turn you take at more than 2mph.

The best example is a watermelon. It will roll around with or without liner. So you just find a box for it or secure it against the wall with something heavy.

Well sure...anything round will...roll..

A cardboard box though slides on carpet much easier than it does rubber. When I have dish to bring to the inlaws I enjoy it not sliding around in the back and spilling all over everything as well.

But that just proves my point.... the cargo tray is carpety, and the liners are usually rubbery

Did you read that right?

So your point is it's better for things to slide around as it slides easier on carpet than it does rubber?

I don't agree. Cardboard boxes with stuff have pretty good grip on carpet. Only loose light objects slide around.

I'm a cat guy and mine doesn't do car rides =)
When the princess (see the picture to the left) deigns to go for a car ride, it will be in a front seat and not the trunk area. Oh, and it will be in the Mach-e. :p

Am I missing something?
A lot. other than being obtuse or engaging in a rather odd discussion for the sake of discussion, I think you're seriously underestimating the cost of replacing the trunk floor panel cover. There's not a replacement part for this car that is inexpensive. Even the Mach-e door badges are $100 each at a discount OEM supply shop. You might want to head over to a local Ford parts website and price this out.
