210-230 EV mile range, sufficient for only vehicle in Phoenix?

I found the survey data about how long people drive without a stop to be about what I expected. It mirrors our drives. 4 hours is about right for us too.

Where the UK differs quit a bit though is speed. Out here in the wide-open western US states, 4 hours is typically 300 miles. Which is just right for gas refuels for us because our Escape does 375-400 miles on a tank.

I am not familiar with driving in the Phoenix area, so I cannot chime in on that. However, I too have ordered the standard range RWD for the following reasons (in order of priority).

1) Price
2) We do have a second vehicle that we can use for longer trips
3) The smaller your battery, the lower the carbon footprint of your vehicle . I liked the perspective from this video:

I wanted to get a BEV at least partially for the ecological benefits of its life cycle. I don't actually drive a ton of miles day to day, though I will be more likely to be doing some of the around town stuff once I am rid of my truck. From what I was able to plan out, most of our trips are in a window of distance where If I need to stop to charge, the additional 70 miles wouldn't do me a ton of good.

All of that said, I totally understand the desire to have more range for most of the people on this forum. I too was planning to go with the extended range until someone else on this forum linked to this youtube video about range anxiety:

Completely agree with this perspective. I debated SR vs. ER for weeks, but at the end of the day my primary reason for going electric is environmental - the fact that the Mach E is basically my dream car is almost incidental. Since battery production is so resource intensive, I'll go with the lower capacity, and just put a bit more thought into our road trip routes when they do happen.

I basically ordered an identical car as @macchiaz-o except extended range. So it will be interesting to compare.

My reasoning is:
  1. Battery degradation -- It's hot here, like really hot. Its predicted to be 116 a week from today. My employer provides no covered parking. And high heat can lead to permanent damage to the battery. I plan to overly baby the battery and try to keep between 80 and 20%. Aggressive, I know, especially since we know Ford is reserving some. I will most likely ease up on this once we learn how this thing deals with these high temps. But in the mean time, that means I'll likely get ~180 miles of range, less going at freeway speeds that range from 65 to 80.

I also plan on keeping the car at least 8 years so want the range then as well.
  2. The valley is a big place. Visiting one of my friends is a 140 mile round trip. Running errands, doctor's appointments etc, I can easily do 150 miles of driving a day. Because I want to reserve so much, the smaller battery isn't good enough.
  3. Trips - I would charge up to 100% before leaving.
    1. I'd like to visit Vegas (if they ever put chargers in).
    2. Disneyland (round-trip 4hrs/6 stops in SR, 3.5hrs/4 stops in ER)
    3. My parents (round-trip 5hrs/12 stops in SR, 3hrs/4 stops in ER -- and even then that is assuming I sit on 120 for a week when I'm there before I come back).
  4. Resale value - this is not a huge factor for me but after the 8 years the more miles the better.

All good points... But the one I'm quoting seems like the biggest. If I were faced with this sort of difference to visit family (+1 hour each way, 3x number of stops), then I would certainly choose the ER as well.

Yep, those are long enough frequent drives to warrant the ER for sure. To do it comfortably.

ABRP uses a 2.92 miles/kWh benchmark for the RWD at 65 MPH. At 75 in the heat, figure maybe 2.6. 10-100% of the 68 kWh SR battery (61.2) x 2.6 = 159 miles. Those local trips would be cutting it close in the SR.

I assume you mean along to the route to get there. Yeah, looks like some holes.

Once there, a number of casinos have them, at least. We usually stay at Red Rock and Silverton. Silverton has 6 in the garage. We usually end up parking right next to them. Never seen more than 1 in use. Hoping they can be used overnight (without some huge penalty).

Red Rock had 2 CCS in the regular parking garage, but it appears they've moved them to valet now. We hate valet, but I suppose it makes some sense for placing chargers there so the valets can rotate cars through if necessary. But there's also a parking garage in the shopping center a few blocks south that has some. Might just park there overnight.

Valet also removes the "ICED" problem.

On a slightly more rural trip, let's say to Show Low as an example, there isn't enough charging infrastructure (unless overnighting at certain places), even when considering a 300 mile range vehicle.
ABRP says if you drive 45 over the mountain to Show Low you can make it back through Winslow and Flagstaff.
