I dunno if this is going to give me the "Mustang feeling", like I had with my first car a '67 convertible, but I haven't been this excited about a car in a long, long time. Certainly willing to see it brought into the future (in more ways than one), extending the range as just one part of a Mustang family.

This also shows that there is an alternative to autonomous people movers on streets of the future.

With an EV where the battery is most of the cost, any upgrades to motors suspension would no doubt end available later on as parts from performance ford and with no emissions all 50 states can swap in the new crate motors without issue :)
I like the "crate motor" idea. It will probably be a special drive unit with motor, controller, differential, and axles in a single package, and sold by Ford Performance . Maybe someone will use this as a gas-to-electric conversion for older Mustangs.

Ford is wasting no time announcing its intentions to bring an ultimate factory performance model of the Mustang Mach-E! A Shelby Mach-E is in the works, as Ford executives has just confirmed!

Ford plans a hot Mustang Mach-E Shelby

Ford’s Mustang Mach-E will get a high-performance Shelby badged version, according to bosses

November 20, 2019

Ford executives have confirmed that plans are afoot to create a flagship performance version of the Mustang Mach-E under the famous Shelby brand. The Mustang Mach-E Shelby would follow on from the muscular 750bhp Mustang Shelby GT500 coupe and sit above the current range-topper in the recently unveiled Mach-E range, the GT.

Speaking to evo, Ford Performance chief programme engineer Ed Krenz said: ‘I’m looking forward to the challenge of applying the Shelby characteristics to an electric car. The trick for us is the fun-to-drive part, and sustainability in terms of charging. It needs to be capable to go all day on a trackday – you can’t do 20 minutes and then have to charge it all night.’

Ford is intent on making sure the Mach-E lives up to its Mustang branding in terms of the levels of performance on offer and the driving experience. The Shelby variant would be the flagship Mach-E in this regard, pushing the platform towards its limits for road and track driving.

The power output for the current Mustang Mach-E GT model has yet to be confirmed but the car uses the all-wheel drive version of the Mach-E’s powertrain and Ford says it’s targeting a 0-60mph sprint time of under 4sec with a 250-mile range. With the mid-spec Mach-E Extended Range models packing 327bhp (and 417lb ft of torque) it’s probably reasonable to expect 350bhp from the GT model and close to 400bhp from the eventual Shelby variant.
Bumping this along. Go Shelby. I want the first one.

I don't know about a Mach-E all decaled-up to look like a Shelby, but, here are a couple of photos of a Mach-E GT on tour with 30 vintage Shelby G.T. 350s. The Mach-E GT was, by far, the quickest car in the group; and some of these G.T. 350s have very serious motors in them, too!

The Shelby guys took turns with the Mach-E GT... they all walked away shaking their heads in disbelief! They all seemed to have really big grins stuck on their faces as well!

2023 and well over $80k? Glad I didn’t wait.

If a power bump is possible for a price though while keeping warranty…… sign me up.
It appears to me Ford needs a performance battery pack. Not cheap to do that right now. Ultimately though the bottleneck seems to be thermal conductivity of the battery cell packaging and not the cold plate.

All of that will be redesigned frequently as battery cells change. So future car designs will be better in that respect.

I can see a market for a performance battery pack for racers. It can be done but it isn't cheap.

Thats a nice collection of GT's!

Interesting that they are using a GT an not a GTPE for the tour (and one that is the same config of the one I have on order :))

Adding more batteries is going to add quite a bit of weight which won't help much. Most gas powered cars will need filling up at the track if you want to spend the day there so you will probably find tracks adding DC chargers to cater to the EV.

To match the taycan for ability to keep pounding around the track it is going to take a bit more than some additional batteries and will probably require moving to a higher voltage.

As much as I would enjoy a track EV, a pure EV is going to have a hard time competing with a high performance hybrid still a least ford are making all the right noises about not treating it as a compliance vehicle.
I see that Farley recently tweeted compliments to Elon Musk. Perhaps new batteries from Tesla and maybe a cooperation deal on motors in the future. A while ago I asked someone on this forum why they chose an MME over a Tesla and they commented that they wondered if Tesla wanted to be a car company or a component supplier. The next 5 years are going to be very interesting. I could see a partnership in technology between Ford and Tesla.

Actually, my wife had driven our MME GT to the host resort for the 2021 G.T. 350 Tour -- the Hotel Hershey in Hershey, PA.

One of the guys on the G.T. 350 Tour blew the engine in his '65 G.T. 350 just 10 miles into the first day of the Tour. When his engine blew, I said to him, "Well, my Mustang Mach-E GT isn't a Shelby G.T. 350, but it sure is a Mustang; and it is a blindingly quick Mustang at that! You are welcome to drive my Mach-E GT for the rest of the G.T. 350 Tour."

He and his co-driver loved driving the MME GT on the G.T. 350 Tour!

Can someone explain to me why they didn't overhaul a model like the Edge? Something that has no racing heritage, virtually no performance model, instead of pissing off the most loyal brand/model customers you have? Edge EVX sounds way better than an infringement on an icon. Edge EVX might pull in a different kind of performance enthusiast to a newly revamped model line! Just sayin".
I think I can explain it. Ford is in the business of selling cars and trucks. To compete successfully, you do so with your first team on the playing field, Mustang and F-150, not the second team Edge.
If you think a little deeper, the Mustang Mach E honors the Mustang by seeing it survives into the future.

As a classic Mustang owner myself, I love the Mustang badging on the Mach E and was proud to add one to my stable.

They posted a video now with some hints to timeline, performance etc.

Timeline- 2023

Performance- definitely better brakes and different springs and they are “testing power trains.”

I agree we might not need more batteries. Maybe a better cooling system to allow longer fast drawing (longer than the 5s the GT allows). May we can use nitro ( liquid nitrogen I mean ?).
