File Form 8911 with 2022 Tax Return

I’m interested in purchasing an EV charger and hiring an electrician to install it in 2022.

For my 2022 tax return, I’d like to file Form 8911, Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit.

No one here can answer that until next year.

The credit was extended (again) by Congress to include the 2021 tax year at the very last minute in 2020, iirc.

Credit currently expires in 2021.

The form should be included in all tax software, because it's an IRS form. Sometimes companies have different versions and make you pay more for higher versions that include more forms. TurboTax Deluxe, download/CD includes all forms. The 2021 software doesn't yet include the 2021 form (only the 2020 form), likely because the IRS just finalized it this month.

Does this also include if I had an electrician install a 1450 240V outlet? Or does it have to be a full blown charging station. I had the outlet installed 4ish months ago. (sorry if a silly question).

I'm thinking I may have to have my electrician write the receipt as

"Outlet installation for charging EV in garage"

The rules says “placed in service” by December 31, 2021. I don’t think there is an official definition of “placed in service”, but certainly your new circuit is usable and I think you can make a case for it being in service.

I opened 2020 app, and the form is not there!

And it was Deluxe version, the same that I was buying for years. If TurboTax includes it, I will switch, I guess it will be easier than doing it by hand and filing on paper.

I definitely have it in TurboTax Premiere.
