It's showing as "do not file" because it's not ready until 3/17/22. If you want to use TurboTax to do your return, wait until then and rerun the software.

In addition, what you "get back" isn't the issue for the solar credit, but it could be the issue for the vehicle and the charger install credits, which are non-refundable and cannot be carried forward. If you true tax liability before these credits is zero, then you lost out. That's unfortunate. We did a Roth conversion on 12/31/21 to fully utilize our credits.

A lot of people swear by TurboTax, and I'm not going to tell anyone they shouldn't. I've used it a lot over the years, and I've also used H&R Block, TaxAct, and others. FreeTaxUSA has been my go to for the past several years because it never seems to be missing any forms and is substantially cheaper than the others. I haven't encountered a down side.

If you download (or buy a CD) TurboTax, you never need to spend a dime more than the Deluxe version. Intuit excels at making people think they need to spend more money than they have to.

I find that when I'm not knowledgeable about something, it's time to either hire an expert, or become knowledgeable, or both.

Like with the Mach-E, I join forums after researching them a bit, and see what knowledge I can pick up. For investing and taxes, I strongly recommend the site www.boglehead.org. Founded on the principles of John Bogle, the founder of Vanguard, the overriding principal is a three fund portfolio (Vanguard Total Stock Market, Vanguard Total Bond Market, and Vanguard International Stock Market). They are also very good for tax advice, they have a few contributors that are quite knowledgeable.

It's always good to use TurboTax to forecast next year, and then redo it several times during the year. In other words, file taxes, then make a copy of the return and adjust things for the next year. You can also use some worksheets (no guidance) to put in next year's numbers and estimate.

When something like the EV credit(s) are non-refundable, not being able to maximize them is a shame.

Ok. Suit yourself. I suggest that you don't file a return with DO NOT FILE on the top of one of the forms, but what do I know?

Sorry, that's not correct. As I said, Intuit is expert at fooling people into upgrading.

My understanding is Deluxe only imports interest and dividends, not stock / mutual fund capital gains.

Not to my knowledge... I manually enter data from the consolidated 1099 PDF that Vanguard issues.

I'm using TaxHawk, which is the same experience as FreeTaxUSA.
