I was recently out with the car and did not have my key with me. I was using my phone as key but it would not start the car. It then asked me for the backup start passcode? How does one set that up?

When you are in your car and setting up PaaK one of the steps is to enter a backup start code on the Sync screen.

https://www.ford.com/support/how-tos/fordpass/phone-as-a-key/how-do-i-set-up-phone-as-a-key/

From the manual Page 63
Ford Mustang Mach-E Back up start passcode 1645731625583

I think there's a menu option under Access to setup a backup start code too.

Make sure you keep the code you set in your wallet or phone--you will be using it.

Make sure you put your phone on the charging pad, most of my key not detected issues are when i leave my phone in my pocket.
If this is necessary for you, PaaK is not working properly. If I couldn’t leave my phone in my pocket, I wouldn‘t use it.

I had issues when readding Paak. So not sure which combination worked but I downgraded Ford pass to the one prior to February, and removed my phone and profile from the Mach-E, then setup Paak in the guest account.

Good luck.

In another thread, I mentioned that this came up twice this week for my wife... the PAAK would let her in, but the car would not detect the key inside (after it already let her in) and start code did not work. With a single entry it sent a notification to my phone app and hers that the number of attempts exceeded the maximum.... Really? one entry exceeds the maximum? Not a friendly phone call from her the second time in 3 days this happened.

My wife and I have used PAAK exclusively since getting the car, but something is going wrong in the last week or two. I've tried the code a few times over the months to make sure I knew how to do it, but now something has changed and it doesn't work.

Don’t we all use password mangers these days ?

I memorized mine - but its a passphrase so it’s a bit easier to remember.
Yay for the password manager. And the pass phrase. Work smarter not harder.

You should have received a card with your hard-coded door and start codes. They will already work. And you should've had the option of setting up a code of your choice when you set up PaaK.

o_O

You are referring to the door code, not the passcode to start the vehicle.

The card that comes with the car has both a door code AND a start code.

And when you set up PaaK the system asks you if you want to set up another start code the first three times you start the car using PaaK.

Mine didn't. One card, one code.
