I use 1 pedal driving exclusively. In engage mode with brake coach on, there is a little lightning bolt that is blue when you're accelerating and green when regen is happening. My question is, can I assume that when the lightning bolt turns green, my brake lights are on? Even if I've eased off the accelerator only slightly? I know there is some formula of deceleration that dictates when the brake lights will turn on, but I'm wondering if the lighting bolt turning green necessarily means the brake lights are on.

Great question-- very interested in this answer. W/o using the brake pedal-- what triggers the brake light to activate?? Inquiring minds want to know!

I have often watched Teslas at stoplights, trying to figure out same. Can't tell if the Tesla driver is in 1PD mode, but noticed one yesterday sitting at light, brake lights off. Strange. If anything, you'd think a standstill in 1PD mode would require brake lights to be on. Or get rear ended?

Yes: Been asked a few times on here.

Brake lights come on in 1-P mode (and stay on when stopped). Just watch your rear view mirror when stopping at night when someone is behind you--you can clearly see the reflection of your brake lights.

What triggers it? Probably software in one of the modules...I doubt there is an accelerometer when the car knows its braking.

Pic please. I have never seen that and I use the same driving mode with one pedal.

Tesla only has 1PD driving. I read elsewhere on the forum (I searched before posting the question) that there is a rate of deceleration that triggers the brake lights turning on with regen braking; I don't know what that formula is and if it necessarily correlates to the lighting bolt turning from blue to green (which happens whenever I ease off the pedal, no matter how little). I watched a one pedal driving you tube video and the guy said that slight deceleration does not trigger the brake lights (his model didn't have the lightning bolt though, it's only on GTs apparently).

I've seen the threads that the brake lights come on in 1P mode, and I've verified for myself. HOWEVER, isn't it correct that they only come on when you've let up on the gas pedal a certain amount? And, therefore, isn't it possible that the regen symbol comes on before the brake lights do?

I searched but didn't find anything specific to very slight deceleration and the lightning bolt turning green. I watched MachE Vlog's 1 pd driving video and he says that brake lights don't come on as he starts to let off, referencing a "g force sensor" that won't be triggered by a slight pull back on the accelerator pedal. However his model doesn't have the lightning bolt. My understanding is that by pulling off slightly (let's say to slow down from 45 to 42) deceleration may not be enough to trigger the brake lights (just like pulling off the gas pedal in an ICE vehicle). However regen is still happening. So I guess more specifically, my question is does the lightning bolt going from blue to green *necessarily* mean that my brake lights are on, or does it only definitely mean that regen is happening and my brake lights may or may not be on, depending on the rate of decel.

This is what I'm thinking, but am looking to know for sure. 1 PD driving has confirmed my suspicion that I'm a shitty driver in the hurry-up-then-coast style, which is ok in an ICE vehicle but probably super annoying to the car behind me if my brakes are coming on every 2 seconds. I need to work on my 1 PD style or switch to 2 pd mode. Or just be annoying.

Yeah it is entirely possible the lightning bolt (an indicator my CA Rt1 does not have) indicates regen prior to the brake lights turning on.

There are so many possibilities for how the software can accomplish this. Simply by setting a regen threshold to kick on the brake lights, a time delay, some other algorithm we don't know about.

It also could be different depending on the software version in your car (parameters adjusted/tuned, different algorithm)...only Ford knows for sure LOL.

The only way for @Kitten to know whether the brake lights come on when the symbol does as she gently removes pedal pressure is to do a test at night, or when followed by someone watching. I would not rely on this until I knew, assume they do NOT come on.

Brake lights don’t come on until a certain decel, I consider myself a 1PD PRO cause I’ve got the feathering down to where I can slow down without the lights coming on all the time

But you don't have the symbol in your display, which is the issue at question.

How do you know I didn’t make my own Lightning bolt stickers? Haha
