Dryer Outlet Adapter For Charging?

I ran into another EV user (Kia) and they use an adapter to their dryer outlet to charge their EV. This is what I found when I searched. Anyone else use this or have it on hand if needed?

The adapter in the picture would not fit into a dryer outlet, which are typically NEMA 14-30. But even with the correct adapter, if you were going to use a 30A circuit, you would need a different EVSE that allows charging at 24A. The Ford Mobile Charger does not.

Depending on your specific scenario, something like that adapter might be okay. Definitely be aware that dryer outlets in North America are typically rated for 30A while your Ford Mobile Charger requires a circuit rated for 40 or 50A to function safely.

Be very careful using adapters in general, and go with something that is UL Listed if you do. This appears to be from 6-50 to 14-50, which should all be capable of handling 40A (more than enough for the Ford Mobile Charger) assuming the rest of your circuit is designed for that kind of load. As mentioned above though, dryer outlets are typically on 30A circuits, in which case using an adapter for any charger that can draw over 24A (Ford Mobile Charger included) would be dangerous.

Thanks! I had not heard of anyone doing this before, but she does because she doesn't have a home charger. I thought if traveling to someone's home, there would be an adapter that I could have on hand to charge overnight would be another safety measure.

Hi Alesia, A year ago, before my first roadtrip in an EV to see family, I asked them for photos of their dryer outlets. The three households I was visiting had three different dryer outlets, so I got all three different plug adapters that worked with my "travel charger" which is lower amperage (16amps) than the impressively powerful one that comes with the Mach-E. Thus, fyi, there are lots of different dryer outlets out there and sometimes somebody has a oven/range outlet being used for the dryer too. Some folks with EVs have also gotten an adapter that works in RV parks, so you can always use that too. Oh, and be aware, if you visit a household where they do not own their own EV they may be hesitant to let you plug into their dryer outlet for fear their sketchy electrical system in the house might not be able to handle it.

The one that came with the car is starting to give me issues, I think because of the heat in the garage. I'm considering getting a Grizzel-E for home and putting the Ford one as a travel charger. But from what you are saying, I should get a lower amperage travel charger?

Get a more robust charger, something you can set the amperage, or one that matches your dryer. If you have a charger that accepts up to 50 AMPS your going to trip the breaker. the ENEL, you can set the AMPS and with work with a adapter. I've done this since 2015 including a crappy house in Hawaii. the supplied charger isn't going to last, so definitely get something like (insert charger option). There is nothing wrong with plugging/unplugging the dryer plug, but be warned, you will wear the receptacle doing that, so instead of lasting a decade, it may only last 10 years....

i use one with a 24a evse, 24a is max recommended for 30a outlet. for charging once a week its fine

I don't get anything from them, but I push ENEL/JUICE WERKS, cause they are very tough, and you can't beat the customer service. The newest one I got said 50 amp, I called saying UM...HA...head scratch, open the app, and dial down to 29...don't want to use your phone, use your computer... I've bought a new one with every EV, then when I sell, I give them the home charger, and get a replacement. there are cheaper choices, but, what is your house/car worth?

You do not want to use adapters, the dryer outlet usually supports a maximum of 30 amps, your Ford Mobile charger is 32 amps and needs a 40amps circuit breaker, your breaker will trip as soon as you use your Ford charger.

You should start by getting a Nema14-50 outlet in the garage first, I am using the Ford charger and it's been working fine for me so far, not planning to invest money in something new yet.

Thanks I have used the Ford Charger everyday for over a year. Just now it is starting to fail, probably with the heat in my garage. So I'll use that as a traveling charger, when/if needed.
