Hello All,

I am planning to take a road trip in my SR AWD Mach-E at the end of the month and noticed that the area around Banff and Lake Louise is a bit have a DCFC dead zone as there are only some L2 destination chargers.

I am only going to be in Banff for two days and assume that this time of year will be extremely busy in the area. I am concerned that the L2 destination chargers in Banff will be constantly full and I won't be able to charge enough to get me back to the nearest DCFC station on my return trip.

I was wondering if there are any other members on the forum who have done this route in an EV and could make some recommendations. I have been looking at A Better Route Planner and PlugShare to see what's around and try to plan the trip but thought that there may be some additional tricks of the trade that someone who has done the route could share.

Thanks!

Locate an RV Park that supplies power for RV hookups. Usually they are 240V 30amp.

Get an inexpensive charging cable to plug into your Mach-e that charges at 24amps.

if you pull 24amps (80% of 30amp supply) to your Mach-e you will get a charge rate of approx 25 Km per hour of charging.

you may need to get an adapter cable to connect from the RV 30amp supply to your charging cable.

you can not use Fords supplied charger because it draws more than 30amps.
But check with the RV park. They may have a higher amp outlet available so you can use your Ford charger.

I have seen quite a few people on YouTube talking about this campsite 30A adapter, I will take a look to see what Amazon has.

Other than this, I am thinking that I may want to do an 80-90% charge in Golden to give me enough range to get back to Golden. The BCHydro charger in Field appears to only be a single plug so I'm guessing that will be most likely occupied.

I'm definitely going to get the Electrify Canada Pass+ to get that discounted pricing rate.

Both Petro-Canada, and Electrify-Canada are well positioned along this route. Just make sure you have both apps installed in your phone and enjoy.

For your stop over, select hotels with EV charging. If available, that would be a bonus.

I am planning to stay a night in the Kamloops area on the way there but am hoping to do the return trip in one go if possible. I will see if that's a wise decision....

If you're in Banff and concerned you might not make it back, just hop over to Canmore (~25km away). There are a few DCFC stations there that will get you topped up quickly and it's an extremely nice place to visit.
