The energy prices in Europe, I don't know about the US, are dictated by the price of gas (not petroleum gas) so even though renewables are cheaper to install and run the price is artificially high. Which of course benefits Big Oil. Plus a significant proportion of European gas (and UK gas) comes from Russia. Who thought that would be a good idea for energy security? (Politicians no doubt) ? If governments had invested in renewables earlier and each country was more self sufficient we wouldn't be in the mess we are in now.
It is the wholesale system (open market) which is the blame here. It is nicely explained in this article: Why does the price of gas drive electricity prices, including renewables? | Good Energy summary: the last buyer to close the door determines the price. Which is gas or oil. That is: when energy demand is increasing and big il needs to step in. It is time governements wll step in to prevent energy-increase and regulate demand. Prevent permits for new energy demanding industries for instance. Or let consumers buy the first / cheaper chunk of supply and big companies the more expensive chunks.... #itistimetoregulate #whynotletthefeddothislikeinterestrates

Still paying 7.5p/kwh with Octopus Go and just started a trial where Octopus decide when to charge my car. I enter the charge % required and time to complete charging in the Octopus app then plug in after 5pm and Octopus does the rest. All car charging controls are switched off. I hope that using this service the cost to charge will not increase, there has to be some payback.
Incidentally I was paying 10p/kwh some years ago on a standard eco 7 tariff before the EV charge rates started. I'm still paying less to charge now than 4 years ago.
Octopus GO rates will go up by the time we renew!

Out of interest what charger are you using to power the automated charging side?

The charger is an old Chargemaster Polar 7kw unit (installed in 2012). I don't think the charger does anything to support the Octopus GO trial. I think it works using internet to the car.

its going to be much higher than that here by Xmas.
Intelligent Octopus Go rates at 7.5p/kwh won't change till May 2023. I suspect then we could see an increase if the government does not decouple wind and solar Electricity pricing from Gas by then.

Yes, everything will be wonderful when governments "step in".

The house is already on fire with "market forces" at work now. Let's try some democracy... (don't misread 'bureaucracy' here)
