Really jealous of other cars with V2L right about now

I’m just so surprised that the car doesn’t at least have a household outlet/inverter inside. A 21k Maverick has it, and indeed my 25k Maverick had it. On a BEV there’s really no excuse, especially when the F150L can power a stadium it looks like.

I put in a generator 2 years ago. Got tired of not being able to flush a toilet or take a shower for a week. Some of us are heavily reliant on electricity (water via well). Because I live in a rural area we are de-prioritized for restoration because the population density is much less than urban areas. I lose power for 1-2 weeks straight every year. Not everyone lives in a city with public utilities and/or warm climates.

Video: Ioniq Guy--5 days of emergency backup power from V2L

This could be a real difference maker in situations where refrigeration is needed for medication, etc.

My house has a 30A inlet and transfer switch that I can use for either a generator or the EV6 (and previously, my departed Ioniq 5).

Unless we know that we will be making a long road trip right away, the car will be the first-string power source. Why? Convenience. Plugging the connector into the car is far easier than rolling out the generator, setting up the shelter for it, connecting it up, counting the hours for maintenance purposes, changing the oil if I reach the interval, possibly dealing with the noise, and putting it all away later.

The generator will come out for longer haul outages or when we need to preserve maximum SOC for whatever reason.

This looks really interesting though:

Emporia V2X bi-directional charger

If this enables V2X on any old EV, that would be awesome. Especially if it can do so at 220V. North American GMP-E cars (Ioniq 5, Ev6, GV60) are limited to 110V to the best of my knowledge.

mmmmm, your case would require a little bigger 'buffer' battery and a bigger inverter. But the MME is a great backup for extra kWhr!

I much prefer the solar->battery route over generators because of noise, fuel, and fuel going bad

Vehicle to Load, and Vehicle to Home in the Mach-E would be great.

The Energy is available... just not advertised or 'automatic'.

Maybe I should sell 'instructional' documents/video for the semi-brave DIYer ? What would it be worth to you if I put together a shopping list and instruction manual?

Trust me, I've looked into solar. The problem I have is that I'm surrounded by very large trees (redwood, mulberry and eucalyptus) and they would have to put the panels about 1 acre away from the house. The cost was extremely prohibitive for the 5000kw I use every month. Also, propane has a 30 year storage life and that's what we have. I go through about 2 500 gal tanks a year. No chance it's going bad.

Not sure I’m brave enough to try it

all the BEVs have 12v connection points. some are harder to get to than others....
12v->120v/240v split phase pure sine inverters are relatively inexpensive ($300-500 range)
....depending on peak loads and duration, you may or may not wanna put a little solar in to recharge for 'indefinite' durations and a buffer battery in the middle and use the BEV as 'backup' for when solar is not available.

well.... not every location works for solar.....

BUT 'emergency use' versus 'normal' can reduce the load enough to be a game changer for many people.

I could put in a 1500watt pure sine inverter on a bracket under the beauty cover for.... $350 in materials and 2 hours of labor.

Yeah it can be done on any car, and good point to mention its not that expensive. But on the Maverick it was a $150 option including not just the inverter/outlet but also additional USB ports nicely integrated into the center armrest and accessible to rear passengers. No additional wires. It would definitely take more labor to make it as nice as OEM since you’d have to obtain some kind of enclosure for the outlet and USB ports.

I grew up with a John Deere repair manual.....

1. hammer in place
2. weld shut
3. paint to match
I can relate to those steps….but I’ve never seen them in any manual. ?
