I think they will be forced to, for exactly the reason you note above. Competitors, particularly Tesla, will aggressively exploit the new tax rules, and Ford can't allow itself to be at a $7,500 cost disadvantage on the majority of MME trims.

Or a lease.

For Premium or GT or Select or Rt 1.
Allegedly, if Ford actually allows the credit to be passed on to you. But, is it true if you lease the vehicle there is no option to actually buy the car if you want to, say at the end of the lease, is this true?

Ford can change that. And I bet they will.

This was a new thing, introduced for EVs. You used to be able to buy the lease out, and you used to get the tax credit passed to you. That's how we got an $11,007 rebate on our 2018 Fusion Energi, $4,007 of it was the tax credit. There was a $645 charge to buy out the lease.

I fully expect that Ford has already figured this out, since nothing was a surprise to them, and they've already launched something that will become known by mid-week. Keep in mind that no sales are taking place today, or tomorrow (holiday celebrated).

My expectation - you will be able to buy out a lease, you will get the full tax credit passed, the lease will have low payments and a high residual, and the money factor (rate) will be bought down.

I expect @hybrid2bev will have the info first.

Ford Mustang Mach-E 2023 Mach-E priced over $55K & delivered in 2023 will not qualify for tax credit! Latest IRS ruling says Mach-E is a CAR - not SUV ! E6Cck0qWUAU9hzM

It sure would be great if they have something figured out mid week for a lot of the early January arrivals. Hopefully they can drop some form of incentive the first week.

This is sure going to be an interesting year as to the EV tax credit situation.

Just checked the Canadian equivalent rules for 2023 ($5000 incentive given at time of purchase) and the Premium trims have also been dropped.

Last year four trim levels qualified - Premium & Select RWD / AWD SR only, now it’s just Select SR, AWD or RWD.

There will be some unhappy people with converted orders which now don’t qualify.

I will assume those of us taking a delivery in January will get hosed. No tax credit,
No price restructuring. But I want the car so it is what it is.

Unless those of us taking delivery:
  • before March 2023 (battery requirement waived)
  • Premium RWD SR or Select AWD/RWD under $55K
  • Rate protected Ford Options (4.49% + $2000) from 2022
  • PCO for model year transition ('22->'23)
I got very lucky with a full tax credit ($7500):
January 2023 delivery,
Premium RWD SR ($25 under max MSRP),
Options rate at time of 2022 conversion,
$6000 PCO.

My Premium '23 MME will net cost $39K after all credits, rebates, incentives - before TTL.

I would not accept such a hosing, but of course it's up to you if you wish to give up on the tax subsidy, and can afford to do so. Especially at 2023 model year prices, I would insist that Ford or the dealer get me that tax credit. If they won't or can't, I'd tell them to keep their car and I would shop for another.
