But guess which one the MAGA loving Fox 'news' outlet thinks we should be worried about collapsing our parking garages?

Also, if the parking garages in NY are anything like what I've seen in San Francisco, they PACK those cars into every available square foot of space, and I don't mean just the designated parking spots. There are many garages that you have to give them the keys to your car so that they can sardine the cars into there.

The headline is a bit misleading. The article seems like… common sense. It speaks not just to EVs but to bigger and heavier vehicles in general, and that many parking garages were built more than 60 years ago when vehicles generally weighed much less.

Sorry, hope that isn’t too “MAGA” of me to say. Also, for every one Fox News there are a dozen equally biased left-wing outlets? I mean, come on people. GMAFB with the politics.

For the record, I didn't post it as a political statement, though I figured there would be some commentary about the source.

I posted it because I guarantee someone is going to hear it used as an argument against EVs somewhere, soon. Like, in 3...2...1...

Digging a little, it would appear there's some significant beef between the British Parking Association and some EV proponents. Also, it would appear, though I can't find it, that the BPA didn't write a report so much as they were quoted in a report by The Daily Mail (that supposition based largely on this article: Heavier weight of electric vehicles could cause car parks to collapse, says UK report | EdgeProp.my )

Here's a liberal outlet reporting the same thing:

https://www.businessinsider.com/hea...ould-cause-aging-parking-lots-collapse-2023-4

This has nothing to do with politics and there are a lot of conservative minded people who own EVs. I know many on this forum. Not everyone buys an EV to "allegedly" save the planet.
Not sure I'd call BI "liberal," much less "news" or "informational," but your point stands.

FUD Alert: Weight Of Electric Cars Will Cause Parking Garages To Fall Down - CleanTechnica
This is a pretty brutal takedown of the original story and its revival a week ago, published before anyone in the US picked it up.

The fact that a small crossover like the Mach-E is even close to the weight of a vehicle the size of an Expedition speaks to the fact that there is a valid concern here. EVs are heavier than gas powered vehicles and a parking garage full of EVs would have to bear more weight than a gas equivalent. Nothing political about that.

I have a "big ass truck" driving coworker that isn't particularly fond of EVs for so many dumb reasons. When we had an ice storm this winter, he offered to come by and pick me up for work, and I mentioned that my car handles the winter weather pretty well with AWD and almost 5000lbs. He said something like "wow, that's almost as heavy as my truck."

He asked me some questions about my car before telling me that he'd heard EVs pollute more because "the heavier weight increases micro-plastics shed during tire wear". I pointed out that my car weighs less than his truck.

I swear the anti-EV crowd picks up on anything that sounds plausible as a reason to hold onto their beliefs.

We call these folks independent thinkers...and I like that. Go against what you're being spoon fed when you're told to hate EVs and all the reasons why.

Realistically though...you guys are in a small camp. And that's sad.

And this just made me go look up with my first car weighed. 1985 Oldsmobile Tornado. That thing looked and felt like a boat. Yet...it was only 3600 lbs.... I'm actually shocked.

The headline is a bit misleading.
This headline?
"Electric vehicles may be too heavy for old parking garages:"

As I pointed out, there are WAY heavier vehicles that have been sold for decades. It's not 'misleading', its completely biased (and wrong). If the headline read, "Modern heavy vehicles, including SUVs and Electric Vehicles, may be to heavy for old parking garages", that would be a more fair headline.

However, the image of the wreckage that they show on their own website is literally nothing but SUVs. So by their own posting, the headline SHOULD have read, "SUVs may be too heavy for old parking garages". But they hate EVs, and they don't even hide it.

Pretty much every vehicle around here is a large truck or a large SUV, but now we are worried about EVs all of a sudden. The whole gist of this report, which I see has been reported everywhere seems misguided instead of just blaming those places that haven't maintained their infrastructure.

telling me that he'd heard EVs pollute more because "the heavier weight increases micro-plastics shed during tire wear"
What's really funny about this line of 'thinking' is; look at the total volume of the four tires (of which only a fraction of it will wear into 'micro-plastics'), and then imagine the volume of gasoline you would burn after 10's of thousands of miles of driving an ICE before those tires would wear out. It takes all of five seconds to realize how dumb this argument is.

They also tried a similar 'more polluting' line of BS with regards to EVs 'creating more brake dust' pollution due to their heavier weight. It's like they never heard of regenerative braking. That lame argument fell apart really fast.
