I got a powertrain / reduced power error, and it turned out that they have to replace the oil pump.

I dropped my car off last Thursday, but it seems like the part is on backorder, and this service center has no car for rental. Some previous posts suggest this might take at most a month, or so. They said this replacement is covered by Ford's standard warranty, but that warranty only covers the cost of rental for up to 10 days, $40/day. I didn't expect it could take that long, so I initially rented a car for only 6 days.

What is the option if it ended up taking more than 10 days? Should I contact Ford directly to arrange some agreement on rental cars? For now, the service center has no estimate for the part, so I'm not sure how long I should rent a car. I don't have an extra warranty and I didn't add rental on my insurance.

How many miles do you have? Seems rather early in the car's lifespan to have the oil pump fail. I believe that is part of the motor assembly, and therefore covered under the 8-yr / 100k powertrain warranty. I'm not saying yours isn't broken, but that part is supposed to last a very long time.

I drove for 13k miles. I ordered and got this car exactly a year ago. (Apr 2022)

Hmm.... I first tried the chat on Ford website and this is what I got. These sound like BS. This person even doesn't want to open a ticket for BEV team although I asked several times.

___

Thank you for holding. So your vehicle’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty (NVLW or Bumper-to-Bumper) is still active and it provides coverage for 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first from warranty start date.

Your warranty start date is 04-April-2022, so you also have the following coverage:
Corrosion Perforation Coverage is for 5 years/Unlimited miles from warranty start date.
Powertrain Coverage is for 5 years / 60,000 Miles (whichever occurs first) from warranty start date.
Safety Restraint Coverage is for 5 years / 60,000 Miles (whichever occurs first) from warranty start date.
Electric Vehicle Component is for 8years/ 80,000 mile (whichever occurs first) from warranty start date.

This coverage does not provide for a rental, I did look for an Extended Service Plan but there is none under your vehicle so allow me to see further of any Ford resources we can use to assist with rentals.

Thank you for holding. After reviewing Ford Programs, there are no warranties or programs in effect that would provide coverage for a rental. I recommend that you keep your receipts in case Ford initiates a program in the future based on your situation.
If there is no coverage under applicable warranties, recalls, or ESPs, repairs and services would be your responsibility.

Try calling 866-631-3788, unfortunately their training is not top notch (or at least things are changing so quickly that they do a poor job of keeping everyone informed and on the same page) so you will get very definitive answers from reps that turn out to be completely untrue.

This number works! It first asks the representative numbers to connect with, but by ignoring twice, it connects me to someone who actually knows the shit.

One I chatted with was very helpful, assuring me that Ford will reimburse $40/day for non-Ford vehicles and $45/day for Ford vehicles for rental. However, the standard number of days it covers varies by dealership, so I have to contact them again if it turns out to be more than 10 days if that is what I was told by my dealership. I managed to rent a Tesla for $270/week, but it was slightly over $340 including tax, so have to pay $60-ish more, which I don't mind. But I will try to find a Ford vehicle if I need an extra rental. (In addition, the rep said he will try to reimburse much as possible over the limit, when I send the receipt later.)

In addition, he tried to reach out to my dealership and escalated the part order. It was really worth calling this number!

You can push them for a higher reimbursement rate, I did and I think they went up to 60 or 65 a day

We have an oil pump?!?!

Does that mean that the “free lifetime oil changes” the dealership gave me when I bought the car is actually worth something??

Yes we do. My car has been in the shop 50 days for this and is still there. I'm going through the same rental car issue. Same 10 days at $40. I'm at over $1200 in rental car fees thus far.

The oil pump, pumps pressurized oil in the transmission gears of the motor. Ford elected to go with an oil pump instead of using a "oil splash" system. This oil keeps the step down gears cool and lubricated. I've seen 4 other failures in the last 2 weeks and I plan on doing a complete write up as soon as I get my car back. I have a bit of fear that this might be emerging as the next big issue.

When they drain the oil from the transmission, if it contains metal flakes they are instructed to replace the entire motor. So, the level of complexity in the repair depends. I have a strong feeling that the dealership that has my car didn't even check. I'll be asking to speak with the technician who performed work on the car if it doesn't specifically call out what steps were taken in the repair order.

So even though my post was satire….. it f we have oil in the motors, shouldn’t an actual oil change at some point be a maintenance item?

No such thing as “forever oil.”

Most EVs have oil in the transmission cases. Tesla, I know, also uses a pressurized oil system while Rivian, for example uses a "splash" system without a pump.

I believe the recommended oil change for the transmission is 12 years or 150k miles.

Wow... 50 days. That is unacceptable. Hope you get your car back soon, and also get reimbursed for those amounts.

Is that long delay just because they couldn't get the part yet? According to other post, swapping the oil pump should take just a few hours.
