I seem to have a compatibility issue between my 2023 Mach-E and my Tesla J1772 Wall Connector (charger). When initially connected the charger proceeds to the communications state as indicated on its LEDs, then the Mach-E blinks orange on its charge port indicating a fault. When I disconnect and reconnect the charger, the Mach-E charge port lights go out, but the car charges fine. I can follow the progress on my FordPass app. This happens consistently every time.

This happens on both of my Mach-Es, both 2023 Premium models purchased in the last 15 days. The cars have no charging faults with other J1772 chargers.

Are there known related issues? On reddit r/MachE some folks said their Tesla J1772 Wall Connectors work flawlessly, so I'm thinking it's an issue with my Tesla J1772 Wall Connector -- it's new and only been used with these two Mach-Es.

Tesla support is balking, and wants me to do two things: test on another Tesla J1772 Wall Connector, and contact Ford to see if there's an issue with my cars. So, I'm reaching out to this group. I've also written to @Ford on Twitter. I know of no other Tesla J1772 Wall Connector installed locally (by any chance does anyone here have one in the Manchester, NH area?). Does anyone know of compatibility issues with recent Mach-Es and Tesla J1772 Wall Connectors?

Do you have an ODB code reader? It would be interesting to see what codes are getting set.

I've used Tesla destination chargers both with native J1772 connectors and with Tesla to J1772 adapters. No issues.

No, I don't have a reader. I guess I could bring it to the local Ford service department to get that info.

Is there any option in the settings to allow teslas only? Fully disable that so it’s is j1772 mode.

The Mach-E doesn’t like it when the EVSE tries to talk Tesla instead of J1772.

That would be a pretty silly option on a J1772 unit. But it wouldn't be the first time Tesla does something silly.

The access control options are 'All Vehicles' or 'Only Tesla' or 'Authorized Teslas Only' -- and of course I have 'All Vehicles' selected.

I had 2 of the wall connectors this year. 1 replaced because of thermal over heating (though it was actually the L2 derating issues with the MME) They replaced it right away. This other one that i replaced over the weekend is working fine but randomly refused to charge my FFE. Turns out it was an issue in the FFE where it refused to charge now, it reverted to value charge as soon as I keys the car off.
You could try to reprovision it. (It'll start up again if you flip the breaker off for a few min). Ican't think of a setting in there that you could have messed up for it to be annoyed. But now that you mention it, since I switch to the Emporia my charge ring has been white.

OK, that’s should be fine.

Love that you can set a Tesla J1772 EVSE to charge only Teslas… ?‍♂

Well, I got the diagnostic codes printed out at my Ford dealer... I'm not sure it's going to help my case with Tesla. My take is there seems to be a disruption of the CAN.

Here are some codes; first:

BECM : U0198 : 00 : 28 - Lost Communication with the Battery Charge Control Module 'A'

then a slew of off the wall stuff:

CMR : B15E2 : 97 : 0E - Passenger side LED
CMR : B115E : 97 : 8F - Camera Module
CMR : B15E1 : 97 : 0E - Driver side LED
GFM : U0100 : 00 : 06 - Lost Communication
GWM : U0538 : 57 : 08 - Invalid Data from Image Processing
IPMA : B1385 : 68 : 2C - Lane Keeping
PSCM : U0415 : 00 : 48 - Invalid Data from ABS
RFA : U200F : 15 : 48 - Control Module Output Power C
RFA : U200E : 15 : 48 - Control Module Output Power B
RFA : U200D : 15 : 48 - Control Module Output Power A
SOBOM : P0CF7 : 66 : 26 - Control Pilot Circuit Intermittent/Irratic

P0CF7 would be the relevant code here. That means the pilot signals from the EVSE are erratic or not correct.

I know that my Tesla adapter specifically states to connect to tesla charger for 30 seconds before plugging into my car. The Tesla charger needs to recognize the adapter first

The Tesla J1772 EVSE should not be trying Tesla SW CAN protocol, if it’s doing that then that’s the likely cause of the charge faults. Tell Tesla they need to fix the software so the J1772 version only does J1772 communication right off the bat.

There is no adapter, this is a J1772 Wall Connector

Thanks, Lee. I've sent your comment to Tesla Support.
