Just got a call, it's been found - It's in modesto at a tow yard and there's damage. Tow yard was closed and police werent helpful with any other details. Progressive will go out tomorrow and determine whether to zero it, tow it back to a body shop or have me come get it.
Hopefully it’s not too jacked up and you can get your MME fixed up like new.

I recently hid Air Tags in both of our vehicles, after disabling the speaker in them to make them much harder to locate. It will take a long time, if ever, for a thief to locate them they are hidden so well. It's not a foolproof way to locate a stolen car, but at around $20 ea, plus a yearly battery change, it's cheap insurance.
These bad actors ditched the scooter that had a tag; they were likely scanning for such. A second hidden tag might have caused them to abort their mission.

Edit your first post.

I am now wondering if they just took it for joyriding or use it to commit another crime (sounds more like it).

I wouldn’t touch it again if I were you and avoid future hassle but I don’t know enough to be in your situation. Take the money and buy a non cyber orange car. And a club and AirTag :)

I second that sentiment. I personally would prefer to take the money if an option and get a new car - who knows what they put the MME through and what hidden damage there may be.

Got my apartment ransacked a few years back and all my photo gear was taken, including very expensive lenses and body - junkies looking for anything of value (although they also stole a toolbox with screwdrivers).
A week later they were caught, it was all still in a backpack on the floor of their hiding place.

Told the insurance I didn’t want anything back as they could have been thrown around, they just refunded me everything. And that wasn’t something my life depended on when I’m using it.

Best of luck!

Do you use Paak or the fob? I’m assuming they just use a relay device with a nearby fob but would be interesting to know if they might have gotten it with paak.
On the plus side, at least you didn’t get robbed on the way to work. That seems to be the new thing in Oakland.
They used a tow truck

I don't think you get to tell your insurance company you don't want a car that they aren't totaling. But I do feel some kind of way about driving it now. I'll update when the insurance company gets back to me today.

Make sure the adjuster looks underneath the car as there could be damage to the battery. Doubt he will do that today.

If they used your car to go murder someone (in it just to make matters worse), and cops come looking for the car, what happens then? Ask this question to your insurance company.

First off I'm glad they found your car and I hope it is ok.

I was not aware of the relay attack... I learned something.
When you get your car back, it would helpful to know how they were able to steal it. Was it a relay attack or something else?

If it was a relay attack, presumably the bad guys still have the code... and know where the car lives.

Political?
DAs in many communities refuse to prosecute car theft. The thieves here are released on their own recognizance w/o any prosecution by the DA. They immediately steal three or more cars upon their release. They even give news media interviews describing and bragging about their exploits. They compete with each other on numbers of stolen cars.
However, recent trends are changing. Some jurisdictions now have auto theft teams which are focused on people who steal multiple cars and grand juries are indicting then.
Colorado has the worst vehicle theft rate.
Yeah, political. The sorts of things mentioned in the posts before mine have often been the precursors to the kind of political nonsense that gets other threads shut down. I didn't want to see that happen here.

This forum was and is not the place for discussion of prosecutions and DAs. The OP just wanted help.

Edit - Case in point: Some people just can't help themselves (see posts #103 & #104 - latter since deleted and member banned). Taking political shots rather than offering OP help or support. It's so tiresome.
