I know Ford was on the list to support “CarPlay 2.0” but with the iOS 17.4 update, we didn’t get the dual screen. I really hate the car in the middle of the screen right in front of me so I was really hoping to see a map this morning.

Anyone have any info or news on this?

If they plan to (or even can) implement Carplay 2 in the Mach-E, it will likely require some OTA updates. At the moment, I think Ford is much more concerned with getting the OTAs for Bluecruise 1.4 to work, so I don't see it happening for a while (if ever).

I wish ford would be transparent about all of this but i guess I shouldn’t have any expectations considering their ambiguous patch notes. It’s like they’re going to start losing more and more customers if they continue on this path.

I would think they would want to implement the new Carplay on a new model or a model refresh first, to make them seem even better and drive initial sales. If it ever comes to our existing Mach-E's, I suspect it'll be after it's introduced elsewhere first.

However, they could surprise me.

I don't believe there are any shipping cars that support next generation CarPlay. Apple's CarPlay page says "First models arrive 2024". I would be shocked if Ford (or other manufacturers) add this to existing cars via update. Everything Apple has said has referred to it coming to new cars, not existing ones.

There’s a big question of if many carmakers would be willing to implement it. You’ve seen that they don’t like they “lost control” to CarPlay in the first place, which is why Tesla and GM don’t have it. This would only be doing that further.

Since the big screen feels the need to reboot from time to time, I appreciate that the small screen always "just works," centered speedo number or otherwise. My hunch is that the very first dual screen carplay first could the kind of beta experience that won't be welcome on many gauge clusters. (And I'm generally an apple fan.)

The turn by turn indications from CarPlay on the gauge display may be all we can expect due to the size of the display. Our Volvo C40 will display the CarPlay map in the gauge cluster now (so it is possible even before next gen CarPlay) but it is larger and seems more suited for the purpose. It took a while for the google made software to support this but has gotten much better (as far as CarPlay goes) with the last 2 updates, it also helped when we disabled google's map. If CarPlay map is active in the center display then the gauge display shows an overview map, if not active then turn by turn map will show on the gauge. FYI- I prefer Ford's system in almost every way to the Volvo/Google.

CarPlay 2.0 on current Mach Es is not happening. And I would be shocked if it happened anytime before 2026 on Mach Es.

I’ve only seen news about polestar with this feature. Look for a post I made about a week ago. There are also a bunch of other speculative threads about this. Our hardware probably can’t support it.

Our hardware can’t barely support changing the temperature or turning the heated seats on (yeah, I’m a little snarky but the lag is pretty bad)
I agree. But I suspect that’s software. They don’t seem to buffer the graphics from the start. Seems like they load the graphics on demand. That makes it lag the first time you touch something. Then it’s seamless for the same ask the second time.

Polestar supports the dual screen I believe.

They do, which I guess is the beginnings of next-gen CarPlay. Apple talks about next-gen CarPlay being the phone taking over the instrument cluster and other functions of the car (speedometer and other gauges, climate controls, etc.) - https://www.macrumors.com/roundup/carplay/#the_future_of_carplay . I believe (though correct me if I'm wrong) Polestar just shows Apple Maps with the native Polestar gauges, driver assistance, etc. overlaid on top of Apple Maps. What Polestar is doing is ahead of everyone else, but I guess Apple doesn't talk about it as next-gen CarPlay as it's just a small portion of what they're promising.

The last I had heard the CEO had deeply committed to allowing Apple and android to take over the infotainment center of the MME. Has he retracted this statement?
