Anyone else electrify bill skyrocket with charging? My light bill has doubled and i barely use my air or heat right now since it’s been good weather here in Florida.
I looked on my usage and noticed when i charge my car im over 70-130 KWH a day va when i don’t charge im only at about 30-35 kWh for the entire day

Quite easy to see how much electricity you are using. Before unplugging, open FordPass and click on the charging banner, and it will show you.

Conversely, in charge logs do the math and figure it out.

In the nicest way possible....when you bought an electric car did you not expect your electricity usage to go up proportionally to how much you drive and need to charge?

What exactly were you expecting? Did you think EVs didn't run on electricity? If you're using 40-100 kWH a day to charge, you must drive a lot. I'm guessing you used to spend a lot on gas too.

You must charge a lot so I don't know if this will work for you or even if it applies but ....when I got my Mach I unplugged my dehumidifier and I stopped streaming through my Xbox. Both are energy hogs . Things balanced out for me but ..."individual results may vary "
Is there a second/garage/basement refrigerator that can be unplugged ?

Don't know what your rates are but local provider, Duke, offers Time of Use, which offers three different rates depending on "time of use". For example, "Peak" (3 hours a day) is 20 cents per kwh and "discount" (7 hours) is 7 cents per kwh.
Inquire of your utility about their rate structure. Then charge during Peak hours only if you own the utility company. Also, while your utility bill may go up your gasoline costs must surely have gone down. I switched from a car requiring only Premium gas. Big change!

My bill hasn’t sky rocketed but of course it went up. How much, depends on your cost of electricity and driving habits. But now you are not paying for gas, oil, spark plugs, filters (oil / air), transmission service, or any of the associated labor costs. You do have a coolant system to cool the battery, but that is hardly an expense. Your maintenance costs went to near zero, and operational costs when way down.
In my case, I have solar, and am on a net metering plan, so I will never pay peak rates. I also don’t use my juice box yet, so I am using level 1 charging, which puts me at consuming power at all sorts of times during the day, instead of just non-peak hours. I pay around $0.11/kw or less than $8 for a full charge. I only use about 20% max on most days. So about $1.60 / day to keep it charged up on week days. Way less than gasoline alone, where I would use 1-2 gallons per day, or $4-$8 / week day.

if you have it yet done so, make sure to setup a charging station, and apply for a rebate on the cost of station. Then program the station to only charge during non-peak hours. Optionally, your utility may install an EV sub-panel with meter to charge you a different rate for EV charging. Both options will cut your EV charging bill down substantially if you don’t of driving and just leave the car on the charger when not in use.

remember, it is better to charge just 10-20% a day, every day, than to Drain and fully charge, so you really should have a system worked out with your utility company where yo just keep it in a charger. If using a travel charger, you can also use FordPass to setup a charging schedule and max charge amount. And for trips, you can disable it, or pre-load your trip so the car knows to charge to 100% before the trip.

Definitely check with your energy provider in peak programs, hourly pricing, or even programs for having an EV.

I have the option to get hourly billing, so I charge when it's typically 1-3¢/KwH (overnight.)

It hurts a bit in the summer when I'm running the AC for the house, but I've saved money compared to the flat rate I had before.

In Florida?
Solar is a no brainer there. You could easily reduce your electric bill to next to nothing by installing an AC coupled, bimodal system w/ a battery( would not require much, ~ 30kWh or so) backup. Especially in Florida.

Charge your EVs directly from solar array in the daytime. Voila, problem solved.

Hard to relate since we have an AC coupled, bimodal solar system and charge our EVs directly from solar array(we provide more electricity/year than we consume). We do have a heat pump for heating/cooling and a heat pump for hot water. And we are all electric. But this year, w/ the very cold arctic freeze (including negative temperatures) we averaged well below 70kWh/day.
70-130 kWh/day still seems high to me.

I do not think your electricity rates will decrease over time. At least in my experience.

That wasn’t my question. I’m trying to see if there is any issue with my charging station or car pulling too much electricity obviously i matched my charge log and bill to get the KWH overage that i included in my post

You're new to the forum. "Obviously" is never taken for granted, you'd be amazed at the questions people post.

You posted in the Florida section, implying that there was something unique about your usage in Florida.

Neither the charger nor the car can pull too much electricity. If you matched your charge log with your bill, and the amount of overage matches, then what's the question?

Are you really using your entire 91kWh battery on many days?

So I’ve never got a first electric bill plus I’ve only charged with the slow charger that comes with the car because I’m getting my permanent level two installed today but I’m going to be guessing/speculating I won’t be using too much power because I only drive 250 to 300 miles at the most a week, and the time of day that I would be plugging my car and would be five cents a kilowatt hour. I would think that I only need to charge twice a week at the most so I’m hoping this is definitely different from filling up with gas, which has been $35 a week that was in a Nissan rogue so I’m hoping, I’m going by a video I saw online of a guy from California. He was paying seven cents. I think he was in California. I can’t remember but he was paying seven cents a kilowatt hour and he said that equivalent was equal to about seven dollars for him to go from 0 to 100 and I would never go below 20% and I would only charge up to 90 so I’m thinking it , shouldn’t be that expensive or am I wrong here? I’m also new.

#1 Welcome
#2 I have the ChargePoint Flex. Its a smart charger so it allows you/me to see what the charging costs minus the rest of the house electricity usage. At 7 cents I put on 1832 miles for a grand total of $37 from mid August - Dec 31

Wow, thank you and we just got my station put in and I was looking online for the average kilowatt hours of mine is at 10 kW charging. It looks like the average is anywhere between six and 19 so I’m guessing 10 is pretty good for the home charging because it did say From 50% to 90 that it’ll be charged tonight , does that sound pretty good normal

My last charge was from 40%-100% and that translated to an extra 60.5 KWH that will show up on my next bill . I dont know to me it seems reasonable that yer usage might go up that much...BUT if the BILL doubled thats a lot of charging . That 60KWH translates to $4 at 7 cents per kwh.
Did your community or service provider just raise rates for summer ? Maybe a new rate as of 1/1/24 ??
Hope that gives you another reference point
