Reservation made for an R2. I won't miss the $100 as we wait to see how the playing field changes radically over the next 24 months. I do like the size and look of the smaller R2 quite a bit. The R1S looks a bit boxy to me.

And here's the R3 charge port location, which is higher up on the car.

Also announced today is that Rivian is "pausing" the construction of their $5B assembly plant in Georgia. As a nearby resident to this pipedream, I don't know how to feel. They plowed under hundreds of acres of bucolic farmland and now it's going to be a brand new brown field.

I'm not a subscriber to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, so I can't read the entire article. But from the first two paragraphs, the article sounds very misleading...

"Rivian, the electric vehicle upstart that announced more than two years ago plans to build a $5 billion vehicle and battery plant east of Atlanta, is halting the mammoth project.

The California company, which promised in late 2021 to build Georgia’s second-largest-ever economic development project, said at an event introducing new models that it will now start production of its anticipated R2 crossover at its sole factory in Illinois instead of in the Peach State."

That is not entirely accurate. What they said was they would begin building R2s at the Normal, Illinois plant and said that the Georgia facility is still very important to their long term plans. The discussion was also started by saying they are trying to pull the production as far forward as they can.

The implication being that they can get the R2 deliveries started quicker by using the Illinois factory to build the first of the R2s, and then use the Georgia facility to supplement production when it comes online.

Probably makes sense. Like all automakers (and everyone else), costs have soared for everything the last few years. They had to roll back their big spending plans. They can save over $2B producing at the existing Illinois plant initially and try to get the company over the hump first.

  • Improved capital efficiency: Total savings estimated to be over $2.25 billion as compared to the original forecast of launching the first line of R2 production at Rivian’s Georgia site. The savings are expected to come from capital expenditures, product development investment, and supplier sourcing opportunities.
  • Improved cash visibility: Cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments expected to be sufficient to fund operations through the start of R2 production.
  • R2 planned start of production: The timing has been pulled forward to now be in first half of 2026.
  • Total expected Normal capacity following R2 launch and plant changes: 215,000 units of total annual capacity across R1T, R1S, EDV, RCV, and R2.

Here is the charge port in the Marquez video. (At 3:33)
I think the R2 looks good, but I don't care for the charge port location. Easy to get damaged in an accident, always a dirty spot on a car, and so low it almost looks like it could be a trip hazard. Hopefully they'll move it before the design is final.

I agree, pretty strange location. Not a deal breaker for me, but I really do hope they change it.
