Looking at the 2024 Ranger for inspiration. The buttons can be more cosmetically elegant but would like to see dedicated HVAC controls.

I like the route they went on the Mach E. It could use some minor tweaks but it’s pretty good. It’s always visible and accessible on the screen, and simple to use.

Buttons are annoying. They get dirty in the gaps, and look cheap in most vehicles.

For me the look of the Ranger would put me off buying. I play with stuff too much.

My hvac does okay without too much interference other than the CO-driver fiddling because it’s not exactly perfect.

I get the impulse to defend the current control scheme, but it's worth noting that the EU is going to start REQUIRING physical buttons because of emerging evidence that they remain more usable and less distracting.

The automakers like screen-based controls because they're more flexible and cheaper to implement, but it's looking more and more to have a cost. Yes, HVAC controls, at the very least.

I would just like the emergency flasher button moved to another location - my wife presses it consistently! Blinkers are so quiet I do not notice it right away. I also control climate manually so I wish the climate control indicated, by a different color, on the main screen which vents were selected without having to switch to the climate screen.

Agree with that. They actually need to move both of those buttons. The park button doesn’t do anything useful anymore so it should just be eliminated. Then the hazards are out of place there.

The EU regulations don't go far enough imo. They will only require physical hazard warning lights, indicators, windscreen wipers, SOS calls, and the horn.

Should always have a volume knob and physical HVAC controls.

I don't think that's exactly what's happening. From my understanding, NCAP... basically Europe's IIHS (an independent, non-government entity that rates/scores vehicles on safety and other things), is encouraging manufacturer's to start adding buttons for some items by making it a part of their scoring model for vehicle safety in a couple years.

So "REQUIRING" is a really strong word here. This isn't some EU government regulator or anything. Will manufacturers probably start doing it? Probably? If it can help them get a better score in their tests and be more recommendable, ya, probably.

Exactly buttons are obsolete. Mach-E interior looks sharp. Simple and easy to use. Now only if they can go back to having speed in the middle of the cluster gauge and having are graphics back to the original format?

I have only had mine for less than a month, so the only cluster setup I know is the current one. So I don’t mind it personally. But from what I’ve read it looks like an update ‘soon’ should change it back like it did in the Lightning.

I am in the “buttons are better” camp because you can continue doing what you’re supposed to be doing (paying attention to the road) instead of looking at the screen. ?‍♂?

The single rotary switch for multiple functions is an afterthought and we all know it.

If I’m not allowed to look at my phone while driving, it means I’m not allowed to look at the giant tablet in the car for executing basic functions. Just put some elegant clean rotary switches for fan speed with plus minus buttons on the surface of the rotor for temperature setting / auto for driver and passenger. It’s really not a big deal and it won’t take away elegance at all. We already have one in the car. Add one more.

But for god’s sake, make that screen ten times snappier, so with all the so called upgrades, it stays functional for a few more years, as new releases continues to slow the performance down naturally. It is embarrassingly sluggish in all MMEs made to date to begin with. And get rid of all those idiotic entertainment apps hogging the memory and make them optional to install.

Buttons are never obsolete! Can't operate your hvac if the screen dies.

I like the new Rangers HVAC physical buttons setup, although I prefer something cleaner. A similar setup to our 2019 Explorer Sport would be acceptable (+/- for Temp and Fan Speed) in addition to touchscreen adjustability:
