New EV – GTPE owner impressions

I did not find one easy thread on new owner learnings and tips so let me start ….

Background First EV – 2023 GTPE with 2200 miles. Purchased remotely and shipped to me from a dealer in MD. My dealer here could not offer rebates (AGI dependent) and it appears used / demo / partially new MME GTPE’s are quite affordable. I had to wait to clear the purchase and get it shipped so I had many questions while waiting.

Fear of the Unknown The manual is a great place to start. Al 496 pages are available on line. But we found YouTube videos very informative. And do not feel intimidated (as we were! ) you will learn many aspects and features over time. And you can just get in and drive the car and learn as you go. Yes you can….just drive the car.

Ford Pass -
Get you and your car active on FordPass – on your phone. Activate at / in the car. Add a credit card for payments such as charging.

Charging – I had the 220 Level 2 wiring installed in the garage. My local energy company will provide a credit for wiring installation. I am using the provided Ford Mobile charger ( many opinions here ) and found my 60 amp breaker is more than adequate for the 32A “charger” . The more sophisticated may want to use a third party charger such as the Classic Grizzl-E Charger. My energy company would also sell me a charger. The free Ford Mobile charger works and I can set the charging time in the car to meet local rate savings. We simply plug it in and it starts charging at the most advantageous times for my local power provider, And it is about 9 hours for a Full ( 10% to 100%) charge at home. You can set the times and % - on the MME tablet. I am only charging to 90% now at home for improved battery life (?) Third party chargers will draw more amps and charge quicker.

On the road charging- Ford Pass is available and I await my free Tesla adapter from Ford. Looking forward to using navigation to direct me to a charger and pre-condition the GTPE before we arrive at that charger. We have read and we will learn more as we use these features. We plan to use FordPass for payment and connectivity and that should include the Tesla chargers. And looking forward to trying DC fast charging !

Driver Profiles – set them up in the car. You can set your seat positions ( 1, 2 or 3) and mirrors and radio stations for each driver. And connect your phone(s) per profile. Sirus is free for first year ….be be aware they will automatically begin charging you at a high monthly rate. Monitor and manage this “automatic subscription” service.

Car Connectivity. I believe that Ford provides connectivity for the car for the first three years. I am unaware how to sign up to add the AT&T service for connectivity. I see my car is connected. And I am getting updates so no action until required. I will add local Wifi because we can…..

Tires and Wheels Many threads and lots of information. I must get winter tires for the GTPE that will work at cold temps. And used takeoff rims seem problematic for fit on the GTPE - and not cost beneficial. I will just get snow tires/rims from TireRack or another source.

Rear Compartment –Tire Kit ! Surprise the rear compartment floor/door has multiple levels! ! I was surprised and can use the space for storage. Ford had a Mustang Mach-E Tire Compressor R2HC-19L523-AA kit. None was in my car but I found one and will store that under the floor.

Other learnings -will just happen. We will look to lock / unlock the car with our phones. And I learned I must disable my Bluetooth so my partner phone will not connect. Valet mode will be used. I will also l set up a guest profile with seat way back……The exit and enterance seat setting will only move 2 inches. I will touch the brakes occasionally to keep the rotors clean. And I guess scheduled maintenance ( rotate the tires?) every 5000 miles.

Ford Mobile Charger may fail within 2 years. Make sure you have an industrial outlet, not a cheap $10 outlet.

Sirus is free for first year ….be be aware they will automatically begin charging you at a high monthly rate. Monitor and manage this “automatic subscription” service. Not free for a year, I think it was 90 days at best.

Car Connectivity. I believe that Ford provides connectivity for the car for the first three years. I am unaware how to sign up to add the AT&T service for connectivity. I see my car is connected. And I am getting updates so no action until required. I will add local Wifi because we can….. AT&T Hotspot plan is separate, yes.

Tires and Wheels Many threads and lots of information. I must get winter tires for the GTPE that will work at cold temps. And used takeoff rims seem problematic for fit on the GTPE - and not cost beneficial. I will just get snow tires/rims from TireRack or another source. GTPE tires cannot be used below 45 degrees nor stored below 20 degrees, per Pirelli.

Top level can't take weight as some have found.

Scheduled maintenance is every 10,000 miles, and can be found in the manual, FordPass, and on Ford.com. To clean brakes, get to speed, shift to N, apply brakes gently, shift to D, get to speed, repeat. Using them normally is blended braking and won't clean them.

Good thread! I just traded my Ford Options 2021 Prem AWD ER for 2023 GTPE and love it. I thought my Premium was fast, but the GTPE is scary fast. Fun!

More tips from the seasoned GTPE owners are welcome - especially about the "jail bars" and other things unique to the GTPE.

This comment from @RickMachE caught me by surprise:
"GTPE tires cannot be used below 45 degrees nor stored below 20 degrees, per Pirelli."

I'm in NJ and it's been unusually cold this week - high 20s, low 30s at night and 40s during day. Are these tires not safe at these temps? I'll have to investigate. Comments welcome!

found legal -compliant -tires and rims on 20s on tire rack - they would not guarantee other rims to fit -and cost was similar
ford also offers training - 30 minute conference calls for free for new owners ! And i

I did PPF front and ceramic coating and now just driving it

I will like other cars in Colorado switch tires an inside mats each summer

hope to extend tire wear with two sets

last learnings were automatic high beams - and becoming comfort with cruise control

No other surprises loving the fun car

what tires did you end up with? I'm leaning toward the pirelli p zero all season ev tires. Yokohama just came out with ev specific advan tires but they're not available in sizes we need.

If you got the summer tires, you should not be driving on them in NJ this time of year. The rubber gets hard at low temps, which causes loss of traction.

Correct, they are not safe at these temps. Below 45 degrees, the tires become hard, slick, and can crack. Chunks can come out. They are not warrantied for that damage either.

A note on the SiriusXM subscription. Yes, the trial is only 90 days. If you want to keep it, call SiriusXM directly and negotiate a year long subscription. If you don't, you'll get a very high rate. I usually get it for 50% off every year. I just insist I want the same deal as I had the previous year. I does go up a bit each time which is reasonable.

Thanks @RickMachE, appreciate the advice. Seems weird that Ford would put unsafe tires on cars that they sell in colder climates. All seasons would probably be a smarter choice.

In defense of Ford, they do make it clear they are Summer tires sold with the GT PE. The GT is sold with All Seasons. I will be getting snows for next winter. Cost of owning one of these. ?

Agreed, but it seems more logical for Ford to put all seasons on every GTPE and let those who want summer tires get them (as that would eliminate any safety issues).

They cannot achieve the torque results without the summer tire, it loses traction. Those tires give it 34 more foot pounds of torque. Watch at 7 minutes and 29 minutes.

@RickMachE - understood. But it seems kind of dumb for Ford to put Summer ONLY tires on a car that it sold in all climates. Now that I'm learning more about it I would have expected a huge sticker on my windshield that said "DON'T DRIVE ON THESE TIRES WHEN IT IS UNDER 45F DEGREES - THEY MAY DISINTEGRATE" o_O

it's actually changed now, when I ordered my mach e gt pe in June last year, (the second order window) you had the option of all season or summer only tires.
