Maybe most states, but every state I've lived in only required emissions check: Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Arizona. None of them require any inspection on EVs.
Florida doesn’t do emissions testing nor any inspections.

When I register vehicles I just pay about $48 online and they mail me my stickers for the license plates and a paper registration each year.

I think in terms of cost savings over ICE, the EV usage fee is a pretty decent deal in most cases.

Tax credits for driving EV..

vs

Charging more taxes for driving EV…

They need to pick a lane!!

Plus we already pay EXTRA taxes because we use extra electricity:

Taxes on Your Florida Electricity Bill
Your electricity bill includes a gross receipts tax that may include up to four other different taxes, paid to state or local governments. You may pay a franchise fee, utility/municipal tax, Florida sales tax, and discretionary sales surtax, too. These taxes vary by area and are not controlled by your utility company. The company collects these taxes and distributes them to the proper government entities.
• Gross Receipts Tax: paid to the State of Florida; approximately 2.56% of your bill.
• Franchise Fee: paid to municipalities and/or counties in exchange for the government not creating an electric utility of its own that would compete with your utility company.
• Utility/Municipal Tax: paid to municipality or county; based on your electricity usage.
• Florida Sales Tax: paid to the State of Florida; 7% of the amount of electricity you purchase.
• Discretionary Sales Surtax: paid to your county.”

The taxes paid on electricity don't go toward the roads.

One of the biggest issues with infrastructure is the lack of budgeting for repair and replacement. When a bridge is built, it has an expected life. It requires maintenance and repairs over time, and that is rarely adequately budgeted. Kicking that stuff down the road is the normal course of business everywhere. Then, all of a sudden, a bridge is "dangerous". And it's a massive bill for an expedited repair.

Pay per mile has been on the senate floor a few times here in Washington. But never gets passed. I just paid $900 to register my car. ?
Don’t you live in the city? They tack on a lot. I live in Kitsap and while I don’t know what my Mach-E will cost my Volt that It replaced was $290 to register. I am expecting to see something around $400 come October.

On the mileage thing they told DOT to come up with an implementation plan. The amount they discussed was 2.5 cents per mile or about $375 for 15000 miles. The sticking points are for vehicles that rack up miles but rarely are in public roads like farm vehicles.

Does anyone know if any state charges taxes at the DCFC that would be earmarked for roads? It costs at least $1m per mile to pave a road.

It sounds like you are paying more than your fair share, that is the problem with the current system.

I put 9200 miles on the Select that I just traded in over my 3 years of ownership. I paid $200 a year for the "gas tax". Even using the least fuel efficient vehicle that I traded in for the Select Ive still overpaid by roughly $375 . Im all for a mileage based system.
As the system is now Ive been paying roughly $1 per "gallon" not Ohios 0.38 cents

Are we paying our Fair Share of highway taxes? Since those taxes are mostly a per gallon assessment, in most cases we are not and it isn't helping anyone. Some States are charging a fee when you register your BEV but that isn't fair either. There needs to be a tax based on miles driven and the weight of the vehicle. Here in upstate NY the roads took a beating this winter and road repairs are very expensive. There needs to be an equitable solution.
Here s a per mile pilot that was run in WA. https://www.waroadusagecharge.org/

The proposal starts with EV and PHEV, then rolls in high mpg vehicles and eventually all vehicles.

Funny that looking for way to pay taxes by mile. Just read a post about privacy. Sharing info with insurance bad, but sharing with government good? The gas/road tax needs to be fixed. Toll? Flat tax on cars? Taxing a gallon worked when everyone drove cars getting 10 miles a gallon. Problem govt figures a new tax, never remove old tax completely, then just keep raising both taxes. Has govt ever let a tax expire, remove a tax, or lower a tax?

I don't understand the 'privacy ' argument in reporting miles. How is the number of miles you car was driven intrude on one's privacy?

I've been watching this subject here in Pennsylvania and I see two things one party wants a ridiculously high tax on electric vehicles, in my opinion to block EV sales, the other party wants a road tax on EV but not until EVs are at a much larger part of the picture.
In PA we have a yearly vehicle inspection with the mileage being recorded and the class of vehicle. It would be easy to formulate a new road tax, but there are two problems that need worked out,
1. Out of state vehicles now pay tax on fuel, that's a loss of revenue.
2. Hitting Pennsylvanians with a large yearly bill would also need to be worked out.
It won't be easy, but it has to happen.

How do they know your miles driven? Self-reporting? Yeah, that will work... No, they'll want a datafeed. Hence, they know where you have driven, and how many miles. Ergo, lack of privacy.

Yeah. $580 was the RTA tax.
