Agreed - but the point I tried unsuccessfully to make was Volvo - a notoriously expensive premium brand - charged less.

Sure, my 2019 fob is less sophisticated, but it's Scandi...
True but not an apples to apples comparison. I bet Volvo a remote with similar walk away and approach features is the same or more.

My advice for those that only have two keyfobs go buy a third and self program. I got a lightning key fob for $65 and self programmed. Super cool having a Frunk button on my remote.

Keep in mind the keyfobs are obviously different. Mist vehicles don't have the walk away lock / light up on approach
I could be wrong, but I don't think that functionality requires a special key fob, per se. I suspect the car electronics control that based on the presence / absence of the fob. Walk away and the car can't "see" the fob anymore and locks the car. When it "sees" the fob, it activates the lights.

Labor to cut and program key $190.00
Key $356.38
Environmental Shop Charge $ 21.99
Sales Tax $ 38.36
Total Steal $606.73
That’s why I’m glad I spent the 70 or $80 for a new fob on eBay. It was actually for a lightning but because I had two keys I was able to program it so now I have three. And it opens the front in the back from the key fob. I was able to program it myself from one of the YouTube videos.

Sadly this is pretty normal pricing for most new cars. I estimate if I lose a ANY fob of a new car that I will be out $400-600.

Let this be your cautionary tale so that you can learn from my utter stupidity. So you know how key fobs look so much alike. Well in preparation for a trip I stripped my keys down to just the car fob so that I wouldn't be lugging around a heavy set of keys. Fast forward to the last moment of my trip to Texas when we were rushing to turn in our Ford Edge rental car at DFW and I put the key fob in the cup holder. Except that I made the dumbest move ever and put the WRONG KEY FOB in the rental car when I turned it in. I left the key fob for my Mach-E and flew back home with the Ford Edge key fob in my purse.

When I got back to my home airport I realized my mistake when the key fob in my purse didn't start my Mach-E. Well I overnighted the key fob back to Dallas to the rental car company so that worked out. But the douchebag with Hertz Rental Cars must have thrown my Mach-E fob away or not turned it in to lost and found. Thanks a lot!

So I had to buy a replacement fob from the Stealership and they charged me $606.73. You heard me right. $606.73 including sales tax. Thanks Ford for raping us at every opportunity! I know that I made a hugely dumb mistake but it really hurts to get hammered SO HARD for it.
holy sh!t

You could have gotten a Ford ESP plan with key fob replacement for $600.

Good reminder for everyone to buy this one for $100 that includes a button for the frunk.

Program it yourself for free if you still have both admin keys. Then stash your original admin keys somewhere safe so you can always program another if you lose the new one.

Switch to this one and enjoy the frunk button.

Didn‘t know you could do this, thanks. Are the ‘admin keys’ just the two original keys I got with the car? Where can I find the procedure for programming?

Yeah, dealer pricing for the key doesn’t look out of whack from what I’ve seen. A replacement key can be had off of eBay for significantly less but $300-400 for the key itself looks about right for a new key from a dealer. Some guys reported paying more for labor to program, so that’s not really out of whack either. The environmental fee seems odd. What hazardous material are they getting rid of, excess electrons from the FDRS laptop used to program the car with? ??

I used to do this with when i moved into a new apartment, stash the original and use the copy. I have a habit of losing things.

I'm not sure I even know where my key fob is. Haven't used it much in 3+ years.

Aside: An annual keyfob replacement is covered under the extended warranty.

This is a surprise to you? Every car I have bought with a FOB came with an admonishment to not loose the key as a replacement costs $$$.

While I realize it likely wasn't your intent, your post was the perfect ammunition I needed to persuade my wife that we should preemptively purchase another fob and program it ourselves. Of course, I had to order a fob that supports opening the frunk. :)
