Our Mach-E has been sitting in a body shop for the past 6 weeks awaiting a new hood. Our vehicle was backed into by a Suburban, and the front lip of the hood was bent. Body shop had ordered a replacement hood. Apparently, Ford packages these very poorly, and each of them that arrived at the body shop was damaged in one way or another.

After 6 weeks, they're suggesting they repair the existing hood.

Really flabbergasted by Ford's inability to properly package their body parts. These hoods are about $1k a pop, so they've already taken a $5k loss. How much easier would it be to just spend an extra $100 to have these packaged properly?

If Ford Parts has a loss prevention specialist, they're definitely in need of a performance review.

Reminds me of Harbor Freight tool boxes. They are some of the poorest packaged and maybe more-so, worst handled items I've ever seen. So many of them arrive damaged that you can pretty much always find one of some size on discount in the store as a scratch and dent. Even people that have them delivered to home receive them banged up and misaligned. It's honestly ridiculous. They're great boxes for the money (this is how I got my 44" a few years ago)... but damn, they can't deliver them without damage to save their lives.

The irony is that, had somebody else’s insurance not been paying for this, you probably would have found a body shop to simply repair the hood for maybe $1,000 and been back on the road.

Good body work is not as expensive as people think, short of completely rebuilding a front or rear end. But get insurance involved and hoo boy the work and prices skyrocket.

Yeah I’ve gone through this before with some parts. They just don’t package certain parts well and there’s no way to inform them of that until the bean counters notice there were a ton of returns six months later. You can call people about it all day, but it doesn’t change anything because nobody has the authority to step in and order a change in packaging.

Yeah, it probably has to come from a Sustaining Engineer in the form of an ECO. Then they might need to purge current inventory for the change to take effect. ??

ECO - boy that brings up memories! Not entirely good ones either?

Reminds me of a story I heard from a small bike manufacturer. Their very expensive carbon fibre bikes were routinely damaged in transit - we're talking $10k+ fully custom racing bikes - until they changed their shipping boxes to included graphics depicting a flat screen TV.

Suddenly FedEx (or whomever) decided to be a bit more careful with them and damage essentially stopped.

Maybe put a big picture of a windshield on the outside

BTW - the hood is aluminum right? Does that make it a bit more difficult for a bodyshop to fix?

I went through 6 damaged-when-received doors for a Husky garage cabinet from Home Depot due to poor packaging (though in one case, they sent the wrong door.)

These were big steel doors. It was a PITA on my end, but it had to have cost them quite a bit for the doors and shipping.

For this situation, it's not like Ford is just getting into the car business. Parts shipping should be figured out by now. ?‍♂

Oh I'm sure someone has the authority to step in but until it reaches a certain cost benefit analysis nothing will be done. I can't even imagine what the CBA is like on packaging at a corporation like Ford.

So many meetings about it. So many guys saying "So circling back". So many PP presentations... uhg...it would make my brain and eyes bleed until I was dead inside.

My brother was the parts manager for a dealership that had their own body shop 20 years ago. He used to say that every body panel they received needed some kind of repair.

Recently ordered screens from Andersen Windows. Took 3 shipments to get undamaged ones. At the factory, they used strapping, and bent the frames...

We bought a bedmat from Ford for the Lightning. Looked awful, not all black. Looked like earthworms had dried on it, but it was part of the rubber. Ordered a replacement, same. Contacted person at Ford I know, who sent my email and pics on to a senior person in Accessories. Nothing ever happened. Got a free Husky mat with floor mats. Sold the Ford mat for what I paid for it.

Sometimes a company is so big it cannot get out of its own way.

Funny, yeah, had this happen. I ordered a drill press which looked like it was still in the original foreign packaging. Perhaps the tool's shipping box was palletized on the original trip, but when the single-item was "drop shipped" to me, it was all shredded cardboard & Styrofoam, barely held together by the plastic straps. And it was a cosmetic mess. I returned it without even thinking about plugging it in.
Then again, I received an Amazon package recently which was two glass jars of product. The packer dumped the jars into a too-large cardboard box with a single inflatable pillow with a predictable outcome.

I got a package from Amazon where poor packing had led to some boxes leaking their content (Cream of Wheat). I contacted Amazon and said it was a mess, and clearly product had been lost, so that I was due a PARTIAL refund. They said "we can't do a partial refund, only a full refund".

Too big to get out of their own way...
