I miss the shifter stalk/knob, as that is where my right hand would rest when I drove.
This sounded very strange, but now I'm thinking you must be talking about a shifter mounted between the front seats, rather than a stalk mounted behind the steering wheel.

The center arm rest works fine for me. One elbow there, and one on top of the door panel. Fully satisfactory, though it did take a little getting used to different dimensions and materials from my old car.

I was a little hesitant about the knob when I first got it. But I really like it now. Small and out of the way. Click once from P to R, click twice from R to D (or back). My wife's vehicle has separate buttons for the gear choices. You always have to look down to hit the right one. Maybe less chance of selecting wrong gear. But I never look at the knob anymore. Seems very intuitive to me.

It's a bad control design.

Located in an unnecessary and inefficient location.

Too easy for driver or passenger to accidentally change.

Too easy to spin it past R and into P.

Can't know what selection the control is in without looking at it and away from vision-forward which is where driver should be looking when putting vehicle into Drive.

Dash display of the control selection is not prominent enough when the control is being changed.

Not to mention; it's cheap plastic construction for a control the driver must use repeatedly and the "L" button in the center left over from the Escape it was taken from.

Telsa and Hyundai (maybe others) are much better putting the drive selector on the steering column.

It's such a obviously dud it makes me shake my head knowing someone who gets a much bigger paycheck than me signed off on it.

Modern for the sake of modern.
Though I suppose it could have been push button.

Happened to me a few times when I was backing into my driveway. Luckily I wasn’t going that fast. The joystick knob I had in the Nissan Leaf worked a lot better than this rotary dial bs.
