Yeah that happens every once in a while. It's very abrupt because the car applies the parking pawl instantly and the whole weight of the car goes bouncing off it. I really wish they would improve the software to apply the brakes first when you shift into park, and then apply the pawl once the vehicle has stopped moving. The way it is now puts a ton of stress on the pawl if you aren't quite stopped when you shift into park, and it just feels horrible/poorly done.
Wasn't the pawl eliminated in 2022 models?

Nope, I think they still have it even on the new motor. They talked about eliminating it but haven't done so yet.
Soon? ?

Well, that was embarrassing lol. The car didn't like that much either.

When I first got the car, I really liked the gear shift knob. It seemed intuitive, simple and different than any other shifter/gear selector that I've used.

Unfortunately, because it's so different from a traditional forward and back shift type selector, I find myself having to look and think about what I'm doing every time I change gears. I'm sure I'll eventually get used to it, but I find it a bit awkward to use. I even got accustomed to my wife's Nissan's shifter fairly quick and it isn't nearly as simple with having two buttons and forward for reverse. I guess the Nissan selector just feels more natural with it's forward and back movement.

Anyone else ever accidentally shift into the wrong gear because of the Mach-E's nontraditional gear selector? Or am I just special?
There are several posts about the rotary knob and errors shifting. I have accidentally shifted to D instead of R a few times and vice versa. It’s happened a few times making a K turn but fortunately have always managed to catch myself before doing damage. I don’t love the shifter.

In the entire history of this car you’re the only one who as ever done that. ;)

The shifter is a little annoying to me, but for a different reason. I miss the shifter stalk/knob, as that is where my right hand would rest when I drove. Now, I have to hold the wheel, put my hand in my lap or push my arm back so it can rest on the middle arm rest. Small annoyance, but an annoyance none the less.

ps. we have all over rotated that shifter and missed reverse and went into park. It's not just you!

Oh yeah, I did it once backing out of the driveway as I completely mixed it up in my head. I normally drive the truck which has a standard console shifter. It was not an amazing feeling. I absolutely hate knob shifters.

We rented a Lincoln while traveling once and it had buttons for drive selection along the side of the touchscreen. aside from a standard console shifter that was my favorite set up. Completely out of the way of the cup holder area and using space that is otherwise just plastic trim.

FYI, there is a PRNDL on the driver display (IPC) that shows in real time where the selector knob is positioned so that you don't have to look down at the center console where the knob is.
The knob’s always in the same place?

Driving without due care and attention and dumb enough to spin that wheel to P whilst moving probably means I’m not consciously looking to see where the gear selection is on a display?‍♂

Need audible warning “you’re going into Park, you idiot” oughta do it for me ???

Been there...done that. I think it's more likely to happen when you routinely use the one pedal setting. I am trying to establish the habit of putting my foot on the brake pedal at stop lights and when backing up after the car stops. Then I'll be in the habit of being stopped before rotating to the drive position.

I have done that once or twice, getting into an unintended gear, but never while moving because shifting from Reverse to Drive (or the other way around) on any vehicle that is still moving is generally not a good practice to get into.

In other words, I won’t try to turn the shifter until I am first at a complete stop.

Yes! I really dislike it and after 3 years I still make mistakes (just unparking). The only one that may have been worse was the old Honda CRV with the shifter on the dash.

I've been there and done that many times. You get used to it after a while, and it becomes second nature. Embarrassing, for sure.

I also didn't realize how much I'd miss not having something to rest my hand on.

Funny you mention the armrest. Out of all the things that I'd like to see Ford improve on, the only feedback that I've sent to Ford was a request a higher, longer center armrest. In my most comfortable seating position, with my seat lowered all the way, my arm still doesn't reach the rest well.
