My wife and I were at a stop light today and an older Subaru rear ended us. We got jolted pretty good, but right now looks like nothing serious...except of course our 2 year old beauty that was in perfect shape now has to get body work.

What amazed us is that the other car was in very bad shape after the accident...much worse that the back our our Mach E. Yes the number is sort of hanging loosely and the rear sensors don't work, and dents, but we were expecting a lot worse when we got out of the car. The other nice thing was another driver saw the accident and said to have insurance call him if we needed a witness.

Is is just the battery cage and weight that prevented more damage and injury to us? That is our thinking. We owned a 2000 F250 SD that seemed indestructible due to its weight and height. I'm guessing our Mach E weighs about 5,000 lbs and the one that hit us 3,000 lbs.

Probably going to take it to the local Ford body shop in Vancouver WA

Glad to see and hear that you both are OK.

But yeah, from those images it certainly looks like Ford vs Subaru was a mismatch.

Maybe Suburu has mastered crumple zones, literally?

Sorry your car got hit. Glad that you seem to be OK. The MME was an IIHS top safety pick, so I think the monocoque structure engineering is quite good. Your rear impact looks similar to others that have been posted where the MME was definitely damaged but the offending car was mangled. ??

So quick question I’ve seen a few people on here that have had minor incidents where they’ve run up on the curb and next thing you know they said insurance company totaled. It said there was $40,000 damage. And recently myself going around, trying to look at changing vehicles and getting anywhere from $30,000 offer to $16,000 offer for a six month old Car well technically it’s a year and six months, but say you owed 35,000 on your vehicle and the insurance company said there’s $40,000 damage are they gonna give you the $40,000 or they gonna just pay off your vehicle? What are they gonna do for you since I’ve never really totaled the vehicle

Oh, wow! Sorry to see that.

How’s your necks?

How crashworthy was Stangy for protecting your necks from whiplash?

Battery cage & weight probably no effect.

Be interesting to see Stangy’s crash data to see the Delta V (speed change) during the crash pulse.

Battery cage is quite remote from impact zone and heavier weight provides only slighter resistance to movement so crush is often greater than it would on lighter car.

However, it appears “bump” section of Subaru’s front bumper went underneath Stangy’s which is what did the deeper crushing of the Sube’s grille area above its bumper compared to Stangy’s lighter crush at that height.

May find more damage under Stangy’s bumper.

Hope it’s soon fixed and good as new.

looks exactly like my 2021. It goes in the repair shop on Tuesday. Initial estimate by insurance Co is @$6,500. I had an accident last September, front end damage but not my fault, where the initial estimated was $1,800 and final repair bill was $23,000. Hoping this is not repeated thus time.

Neck, back and left hip are sore today for me and my wife. So will see in a few days how we hold up. Last time in an accident (got T-boned, not our fault) took about 2 months to get back to normal.

I'll look under the bumper later to see if the frame is damaged. Hard to imagine the damage to the other car and not causing some real damage to the Mach E. We normally hold our cars 15-20 years.....so not sure what to hope for....total or repair.

That's not how it works... The insurance company will figure out an estimated cost to repair your vehicle, and they'll also pull the total value of the car (blue book value or maybe they use black book? not sure.) If the cost to repair is greater than the total car value, they "total" the car and only pay the total value.

It has nothing to do with how much you owe. If you owe more than the total value of the car, and the insurance company totals your car, you end up owing the difference out of your pocket (unless you have "gap" insurance.)

It’s been a long time since I had an accident, but I remember when I totaled my car my mustang ICE at the race track, they did give me a blessing and let me slide, no rate increase, many years good member and paid for all the damages, but they did total the car and I remember them saying something like it was 75% or more they totaled it

I once had a "near total" situation. I got rear ended by a big work truck and it bent the frame in my car (an '84 dodge diplomat - a former police car.) The car was about 10-12 years old, but the bent frame really wasn't that bad. The car was very drivable and street legal.

I talked to the insurance adjuster and finally convinced him to give me $1 short of total value of the car instead of totaling it. Then I drove that car for another 5 years.

When I wrecked that mustang I finally realized the actual steel roof roof on top of a mustang GT is actually a part, steel roof was like $300 if you wanted the glass proof if it was 4500

I got rear-ended in my Fiero GT in the late ’90s. The other guy’s insurance said they were going to total it. I negotiated with them to only get paid $500 less than their “value” (it was worth more than twice what they insisted). Some months later, I got a new pink slip and registration from DMV. Salvage titled. Gr-rrr! ??
