Does Ford need to update your car? I get that it can be updated, and if there is a problem an update is necessary. But just because they can update your car over the air does not mean your car needs it. Plenty of cars never get software updates. I realize that this is the direction we are headed (all cars will be connected eventually for good or bad), but has Ford actually promised to update our cars that are driving just fine? I don't remember being told that but I have to admit that I never questioned it either. I know that some people were promised a new BC version via update when they purchased. But if it weren't for this forum I would have no idea about most of the updates.
This frustration is based on Ford advertising that they can and will update the car over-the-air but the system is slow and unreliable. Since they advertise it, I do think they NEED to update the car. Especially features they advertise and any recalls that pop up. Recalls should be able to be rolled out quickly and reliably. Having to go into a dealer to get a software update is costly to me and to Ford. I have an appointment for the 1-pedal fix next week and I am not thrilled.

Farley has explained in depth the issues they’ve faced by cobbling their EV’s together with many modules from different vendors. Those car makers /AI company that have built it from the ground up as an EV have an easier time with OTA’s. Ford is trying to get like 6 different vendors to talk to each other and update without breaking another module. It’s not easy (I’m in IT if that matters).

When they do get an EV platform built from the ground up, then the OTA’s will get better. I don’t see it improving much for us current generation owners.

Just look at VW or Chevy for how bad OTA’s can get (or not ever get in some cases). Worst case is if you own a Fisker ;)

To answer your question; YES!! Ford came out on this Forum and included the 2021's and said they would be rolling out BC 1.3. Hence, the consternation as to why it has not happened......Yet.

There's been a few reports of folks being given a forth year free recently. Maybe Ford agrees with you. :)
Spill ALL the beans! Who do I have to yell at? lol

It's been two years now for me.

The old screen format is better and the car works fine, so I don't accept updates.
It seems you really wanted to say that, even having nothing to do with the topic. lol

That's a more philosophical discussion, but updates have 2 main objectives:

1- Fix software bugs (for example, my Bluetooth handoff failed every time. Entering the car while having an audio connection through data while on a zoom call? It went mute.)
this is convenient for users, but mostly saves Ford a ton of money in warranty label at the dealership.

2- New Features: this creates consumer "stickiness" and delight. And at this time, people expect it. The line of speech, like BMW and Mercedes seem to have, where they say "we don't need updates because we ship our cars perfect and ready", doesn't work anymore. It brought a grin to my face when Youtube showed up. DO I use it often? hell no. Does it matter? NO, I like it any way. Did I LOVE when the CAMERA BUTTON was added to top ribbon? YES, and I use it EVERY DAY.

I get that not everybody cares about these things. I work in tech, deploying innovative software for a living, and driving a computer that changes overtime is something AWESOME for me. Hence why I would buy an R1S before an iX, although I love BMW's design.

Hopefully that makes sense. Software updates is just the norm. My traeger smoker has it. My TV has it. My thermostat has it. Should my car have it? HELL YEAH!

Ford is doing a bad job at a first glance, and the BC1.3 rollout is an example of a drunk driver trying to stay on a winding road without going to the curb, but this is a complex change. I think Ford is not the worst. I heard that Kia/Hyundai/Genesis is abysmal. Volkswagen and Volvo, too. GM I think it's also behind. And even Tesla, the king in the area, shipped the cybertruck without LANE KEEPING, the most basic feature in ADAS these days. And still no word when they will get it.

With love, Rod :)

And now that I was nice to Ford, time to complain again! I HATE that I stayed 1 year without any OTA, and that I still don't have BC1.3.

If I had gone a year without updates I’m sure I would have started doing them myself with FDRS. I went six months without updates and then I was starting to think seriously about it.
FDRS is NOT cheap and it should not be required for a car that came from the factory capable of performing OTA updates! This is a failure or Ford. @Ford Motor Company needs to own it!

FDRS is cheaper than feeding my grandkids at Whataburger.

I think you mean the OBD adapter ain't cheap? ? (no, it isn't. That's true)

@Ford Motor Company, what gives? No updates since May, no BC 1.2, 1.3 or 1.4. Soon my "free" BC subscription will expire and I will never have gotten the benefit of the improved versions. Is that how Ford treats those of us who took a gamble on your product? Not a happy customer.

On Ford’s Mach-e webpage they advertise OTA updates. They also show a Mach-e plugged into a Tesla charger. To me that means customers have a reasonable expectation of getting timely updates (especially for enhancements) and getting their free adapter.

Mach-E's do get OTA updates.

It's just that most aren't valued because Ford doesn't explain enough about each one to the recipient.

And an image of a Mach-E at a Tesla Supercharger? That image is backed up by the multiple images posted on this forum of members doing exactly the same.

The point of the OP was it’s been a year since they’ve had updates. My point was specific to the timeliness of getting updates. And yes, you’re right, people do get updates, and people do get their adapters. But, just because other people get their’s, doesn’t mean an owner should be OK with not getting his/hers.
