Reason why your Dashcam should always be recording, especially when parked.

On September 22, 2024 at 2:47 am, someone backs in to my Mach-E while it was parked unoccupied, my Garmin 67W dashcam was set to Parking Mode. A driver backs in my car. (Click on link for video). All the occupants get out to see the damage and then walks away as if nothing happened. Needless to say I was pissed when I saw the video. I contact Hertz the next day. Hertz reached out to me 2 weeks later. They saw the video and accepted fully responsibility and covered the damages to my vehicle.

I've read so many post about the Electrical System Drain on our Mach-E's and seems like everyone suggests to wire your dashcam on ignition on only. I have my dashcam set to always on and recording, and yes, I get the dreaded Electrical Drain message a few times a month but I just ignore it.

In case you are wondering what about my setup, here is what I'm using:
Garmin 67W - Front
Garmin Mini 2 - Rear
Garmin Constant Power Cable

Ouch! That crunch noise makes me sick just hearing it ?. Glad you were able to have Hertz take care of you.

Slowly back into parallel parking spot...then accelerate.

Guess no option for reverse automatic braking in the Tesla.

My MME would be parked in the locked garage at home during those hours. There is already video in the parking lot at work.

I have one of the Blackvue batteries to match my camera set (2CH-900S). It gives me about 20 hours of parking mode coverage for both cameras without touching the 12V. The battery is hard wired to a switched fuse and charges up while I drive.

It's not cheap at all, but I'd rather this than potentially ruin my 12V with the extra discharge/charge cycles. I had this happen in my last car with the same cameras but a different power setup.

I'm stunned when stuff like this happens. A few years ago at a swim meet someone in an F-250 drove into the side of my Golf while trying to park beside me. Thankfully someone saw it all happen and left me a note with the person's license plate number.

I'll be looking into the Garmin and will likely just connect it to an external 40,000 mAh battery pack.

Thanks for sharing!

Make sure you look into how this might work with your particular camera. From what I've read, some batteries just aren't good for this type of use (especially the temperature cycles of being left in a car). The Garmin might be fine, but I'd suggest at least reading up on it before jumping in. It would obviously be easier than the expensive backup batteries out there made just for dashcams.

The Tesla was a rental car. The person renting it will get a surprise bill in the mail from Herz
How did you determine the Tesla was a rental?

I bought the Thinkware U1000 and a Cellink Neo https://a.co/d/82MyeEO

Defiantly not cheep, but I bought these November 26, 2021 and its still working just fine; also on my original 12v battery which I plan on getting replaced this month. I've read too many stories of the 12v battery going kaput and being stranded, so that is why I went that route.

I have the U1000 as well. Did you mount it on the plastic cover behind the mirror? I noticed that the indentation looks like it can accept the dash cam.
