Please don't kill me and say the answer is all over the boards. I tried searching but don't see a dedicated post for this.

I just got an adapter, and I don't use superchargers often, but with the adapter I may start taking the car on longer trips.

Is there a difference in price if I activate plug and charge versus just using the EA or Tesla apps? Again, I won't be a high volume user....probably charge at one or the other maybe 1-2 times per month.

Thanks in advance!

There is zero price difference.

IF you become a member of EA ($7) or Tesla ($12.99), you get a discount (25% for EA, ~20% for Tesla) for that month, but you must use their apps to initiate a charge when you are a member.

For your use case, use Plug and Charge.

And yes, there are multiple posts discussing this. ;)

I pay the $7 for EA and generally pays for its self with 2-3 visits

As you read the posts to your question you will have enough info to make your own choice. I do take long trips with my Mach E and Lightning. On long trips memberships do work and are beneficial. From my experience when traveling occasionally 1200 miles trips with my Mach E or towing my camper to the coast on 600 miles round trips the membership is advantageous. When I use the Tesla SC stations, I save enough to pay for the membership fee.
EA is a sticky situation. Some will tell you that they have no problem with EA stations. My most recent experience with EA was problematic the least and regretful. Won’t recognize my app or my membership at the station, and the only way to take advantage of the better rate was to call them and have them initiate the charge. I don’t have 5 to 10 minutes of my time to call someone at EA to initiate a charge.
The issue with EA, as the EA support system says, is of the ongoing software updates. Unlike with Tesla stations with the the Tesla app, the charging is seamless and you get the discounted rate displayed on your phone at those particular station you are charging.
EV Go has the discounted rates when you are a member of their network.
Waiting for the Rivian network to open also and try it for the first time.
If you don’t care about membership fees then Plug & Charge thru the Ford account is relatively simple. You get charged thru your Ford Pass account at a higher rate. You will be surprised at first and then you make your own choice. Membership or no membership fee. You will see the difference.
Good luck.

Consider this. You save tons of money on charging at home. Paying full price at DCFC on long trips a few times per year or getting a discount paying the subscription fees just is not worth worrying about.

Charge at least 5-6x a month at Tesla Superchargers so I use the Tesla app and start the charge using the app.

I pay $12.99/month for the 25% lower discounted rate than the regular or P&C rate.

At the lower Tesla rate, it's cheaper ($0.39/kWh) to charge at Tesla than charging at home ($0.61/kWh) plus I get 4% back using Citi Costco VISA card for all EV charges.

BTW: I have turned OFF P&C for Tesla because sometimes when the Tesla app does not communicate with the car, it reverts to the higher cost non Tesla driver rate.

You also paid a lot more for the EV in the first place than what you'd have likely paid for a comparable size ICE. I count all the savings from home charging at cheap residential rates as going to narrow some of that $15,000 gap. None left over to offset any DCFC membership costs.

There's a lot of ways to slice it, of course.

$0.61/kWh home rate?!? Holy %@*&!!!

I knew CA was crazy expensive but didn't know it was 6x higher. Mine is $0.105/kWh.

I scratch my head when I read stuff like this. So, if you save money doing "A", then not saving money when doing "B" is not worth worrying about?

First, there's no reason to worry about any of it. That said, saving money is saving money. Let's say you do a 2 day trip to Florida with a hotel stop and free charging at that hotel (yes, that's worth looking for and comparing hotel cost with free charging to hotel cost with paid or no charging). ABRP shows that as about 1,200 miles, and filling up with about 350kWh. At 50 cents per, that's $175. By paying $12.99 (and immediately downgrading so I don't need to remember to do it in a month), I would save $35 - $12.99 = $22.01 on ONE trip. If I travel within that 30 days, that's more savings and no fee.

We did a trip up north 2 weeks ago, so I signed up with EA for that trip, $7, and saved some money. Now, I will be taking a daytrip coming up within the same month, and saving more money.

Saving money all the time is just being smart. $22.01 is 3 beers at a craft brewery, plus tax and tip.

I am not sure how they came up with this 61 cents. Online suggests 31 cents vs the nation average of 15 cents.

I actually looked this up a couple of days ago. The ICE Mustang GT with similar specs and trim at my local dealer cost just as much as what I paid for my GT.

The name and a few styling cues are about the only things the ICE Mustang and the Mach-E have in common. One's a 2dr sportscar and the other a 4dr crossover. As far as interior space, cargo, functionality, AWD, etc, the Mach-E has more in common with an Escape.

From a post online 6 months ago. Seems there are some peak charges that can go very high. But don’t forget gas prices are higher as well.

“
We have the EV-2A rate from PGE (Northern CA), which is .35/kwh off-peak. Peak hits .57/kwh in the summer months. Those are not typos, and if PGE has their way those will be increasing 10 - 15% this year.

For my 2023 CA Route 1, I get about 3.5 kWh/mi so it’s .10 / mile. The 2018 Edge I traded in for the MachE got 21 mpg, and gas here is 5.20 a gallon, so the Edge got .25 / mile. So still ahead but fueling a car in CA is not cheap no matter how you do it. Fuel cells may be an exception, but there aren’t any hydrogen fuel pumps.

Make sure your home charger is only charging off-peak (which runs from 12am - 3pm). As others pointed out, it’s not how much you pull but when.”

You also have to look at who they are marketed to. I would have no problem buying a MME GT, MGT or Challenger as my personal ride. You would not catch me dead in an Escape or anything like it. ?

Oh sure, everyone has different tastes in vehicle looks too. That's why I didn't buy a Model Y. Very similar vehicle to the MME in most practical aspects, but it looks so bleh to me. I actually like the looks of the Escape better than the Y.
