That type of breaker is over 400 dollars
Maybe it depends on your panel manufacturer…a 50 A Siemens QFP two pole GFCI breaker is only ~$90…I haven’t had any issues with it after two years, but I did just order a spare.

I installed the Leviton 14-50 receptical about four months ago, it’s been working fine, don’t forget to buy the larger cover plate!
I have two chargers and figured that charging at the maximum amperage really wasn’t needed for my use and lowered them both by 8amps, (Grizzl-E mini 40 to 32 and ChargePoint home flex hardwired 48 to 40).

For those near a Menards, their Pass and Seymour legrand 14-50R outlets which I have, look full depth contact, and the manufacturer information states compatible with level 2 charging. $9.95 I think.

Those are not safe. Sorry. Replace it with one that is specifically designed for high current over many hours, like what we do when we charge our cars.

Don't feel bad. I made the same mistake, and I am an electrical engineer (at least by education, LOL). I thought there was no difference, and paying more for an industrial outlet was BS.

Nope. I was wrong. Get a safe outlet. Preventing melting damage, or a fire, is worth the minor increase in the cost for an industrial 14/50 outlet. There are real differences you can see and measure.

I admit it when I am wrong.

I did the same, installed a $15 outlet only to replace it later with a legit one. It’s just not worth the risk.

Yeah, you're probably right. Almost ran into HD tonight. The legrand even shows a pic of a car charging. But for 40 bucks I'd rather not burn down my new outbuilding with the mach e, Ducati, and Aprilia in it.

I have that plug for my 40 amp charger with #6 AWG wiring for 3.5 yrs now. The blades look hefty and the plug take a hefty push to plug in. I've never detected any heat build up even with an IR heat gun. I know some here swear if you don't have a Hubbel or Bryant you will burn your house down but this appears to be a solid unit. I put a thin coating of dielectric grease on the terminal connections. Also I'm not plugging/unplugging frequently.

Perhaps more important than the mating interface between the male and female connectors is the method of retaining the mains leads. A proper clamp terminal is much better than a terminal where the screw directly contacts and crushes the wire. ??

@mkhuffman and the others are right.

This is what a built to code, new construction, 32 amp L2 circuit using 6-50 plug looks like after 3 1/2 years of rather modest use. Lowering the amperage to 32 amps doesn’t work — proper 14-50R or 6-50R work. Proper hardwiring, when possible, works too. There are better options now, use those.

The now former 32 amp charger was used no more than 4 hours at a time and usually 1 day a week. I can count the number of times I’ve charged longer over the last nearly 4 years on my fingers. The electrician who came out to troubleshoot and install the new (hardwired) EVSE said the heat and melted away the wiring to the outlet, at least in that vicinity. This was very close to becoming a disaster.

When I researched EVSE's for my MME, I concluded that there was an unnecessary potential for problems using an outlet. I determined that for less expense, a higher charge rate and safer use, a hardwired EVSE could be installed. It was a no-brainer for me to install a hardwired unit with #6 wire at 48 amp speeds with a 60 amp breaker.

Just a bit of info for future readers who may find this thread - #6 wire on a 60A circuit is fine if the wiring method is THHN in conduit or MC cable. If the wiring method is NM (AKA “Romex”) #4 wire is required.

This outlet is now available in Home Depot stores and it is the real deal. I am going to replace the two crappy ones I installed when I didn't know any better.

Here are pictures of the one I purchased today from my local Home Depot for $39.00.

How did it crack like that?

EDIT: just realized that’s your new one.
