Ford Mustang Mach-E Tesla sales fell in 2024 [CLOSED DUE TO POLITICS] avatar-image-for-bengt_100544847_s

BENGT HALVORSON JANUARY 2, 2025 12 COMMENTS

  • After many years of gains, Tesla sales and deliveries dropped
  • Tesla’s share of the U.S. EV market has fallen below 50%
  • U.S. registration figures are yet to come
Tesla sales and deliveries turned downward in 2024, after a seemingly unstoppable trajectory of double-digit gains for many years.
Globally, Tesla delivered about 1,789,226 million vehicles in all of 2024, with production of about 1,773,443 million vehicles. Both of those figures are down versus the reported 1,808,581 deliveries and 1,845,985 vehicles made in 2023.

That’s just over a 1% drop in deliveries in 2024 and a nearly 4% drop in production for the year. And it might have been worse without a rally in the fourth quarter. Tesla noted that it posted a delivery record for Q4, at 495,570 vehicles.

To compare, a year ago Tesla was touting some very different results. Its 2023 deliveries and sales grew 38% and 35%, respectively, over 2022. Tesla’s 2023 sales surge was strong, and its sales numbers exceeded 2022 numbers every single month of the year according to DOE data. That said, China’s BYD continued to edge up on Tesla on the global front in 2023.

In 2023, Tesla CEO Elon Musk became political and by extension so did Tesla in a way it never had been before. By April 2024, reputational studies were showing the relationship, as even more of the American car-buying public connected Tesla with Musk. At this point, it's hard to ignore an array of consumer-sentiment data points suggesting that the world's richest man may be getting in the way of Tesla sales growth, especially in California, where it’s held more than a tenth of the new-vehicle market.

Tesla’s share of the EV market shrank in 2023 despite price cuts, to around 50% of the U.S. EV market, and with 2024 EV sales expected to rise overall by about 20% versus 2023, it will certainly lose more of that in 2024. Tesla had continued those price cuts in 2024, with an April move that repositioned the Model Y below the Model 3, thanks to the federal EV tax credit that Musk has backed eliminating.

The Model 3 and Model Y composed the vast majority of Tesla’s global total. Just 94,105 of its global production and 85,133 of its global deliveries were of “other models”—likely including the Model S, Model X, Cybertruck, and Semi.

As a footnote to this: It’s not yet clear whether Tesla saw sales sputter in the same way in the U.S., looking at the entire year. Through October they were down, however. Citing registration-based figures through that month, Automotive News tallied 499,870 sales through that month, versus 535,834 for the equivalent period in 2023.

Tesla doesn’t report U.S.-market sales figures, which generally rely on state registration numbers and their commensurate lag. But we’ll have an idea on those, and whether Tesla managed to achieve U.S. sales gains for the year, within a few weeks.

Increased selections in the market that are IMHO better and cheaper than Tesla AND believe it or not….him cozying up to Trump is going be a factor in how many choose to spend their money elsewhere.

I’m sure Musk’s politics have turned some people off from buying that brand specifically but honestly I am not sure what the actual number of Americans are who care about shit on Twitter. It seems to be actually not that much in the grand schemes of things.

I think a much more realistic issue is that #1 others have caught up, he was the first to use the government to basically keep the business afloat, not just gov subsidies but all the carbon credits he sold to California. And #2 Tesla is old and stale. No new models for years and years. No low cost option they promised four years ago. He isn’t interested in the car company anymore. It’s now a “technology and AI” company. Nobody can justify the stock prices of “just” a car company so now have the promise of robots and AI and self driving taxi cabs to make us rich.

So typical. These guys think they’ve done everything themselves and when they get to the top, they pull the ladder up.

It's not twitter/x, it's the spending massive amounts to get the orange cretin elected to the government where he has massive contracts etc, not to mention being the head "government efficiency" mook, conflicts of interest out the wazoo. plus basically being orange cretin's "first dude".

On a more mundane level the lack of stalks in the Model 3 and potentially in the revised Model Y won't help sales in countries which have lots of roundabouts. I can live without the gear selection stalk which is now touchscreen based but not the indicators.

Musk showing what kind of a dirtbag he is ensured I did not by a Tesla - I was on the fence between the Mace-E and Model 3 but I couldn't stomach giving that asshat any more money. Now that he's got the X megaphone IMHO a lot more people are turned off by him revealing his true nature.

Then there's the fact that BYD etal are gaining share while Musk continues to pursue pipe dreams - when he's actually paying attention to Tesla at all.

Yeah he deserves $56B because of how much he does for Tesla

they should've prioritized re-modeled Y and a smaller/more affordable EV over the cybertruck. all that tech and leading edge manufacturing wasted on a dumb "project" like the cybertruck. they could've made a kick ass truck/suv with that tech and they would've eaten rivian, ford and gm's lunch...

musk's politics and billionaire comic book villain only seals the deal of writing tesla off the list, as more alternatives have arrived...

ford, bmw, hyundai/kia, polestar/volvo, gm, vw/audi/porsche, etc. all have offerings i considered over tesla.

I want LESS thing selected on the touchscreen, not more. If your touchscreen goes out, you are dead in the water if you can't even put the vehicle into drive. Tesla going cheap by removing important things like speedometers and gear selector makes me wonder what else they are skimping on...

Well his plan this week seems to be to attempt to overthrow the UK. So maybe after declaring himself King he can boost Tesla sales by making them the only car sold to the poor souls under his rule.

That may very well be his goal. I’m very skeptical of his intentions when it come to this government efficiency (DOGE) thing. And that also goes for that Ramaswamy dude.

The day Tesla admits it is a car company will be the day Musk is no longer the richest person in the world.
