Background:

Because I'm overly fond of spreadsheets, I've tracked my home electric use (in an all-electric house) for years. BGE is our service provider, and while we have options from other suppliers (if I have the terminology correct), I've not noticed dramatic savings between the available vendors.

I took a deep dive into BGE rates as part of our L2 charger install (and a failed effort to capture some of Maryland's EVSE rebate funds...but that's another story). I instantly regretted this as I looked at multiple layers of cost (energy, supply, delivery, franchise, transmission, taxes, fees) layered on ...sometimes in layers as thin as thousands of cent! And of course there are variations by seasons...and maybe time of day. And BGE does not make this information especially easy to find or digest.

So, I simplified everything into what I call my gross energy cost (using my total KWH and total BGE bill) as the two factors. If my math is right, I'm paying about $0.19 per kWh (about 12 cents of this energy, the rest is...all the other thin layers).

How's BGE (or your non BGE-provider) treating you?

Considering the recent rate hikes and even more planned for June, not good. I dont even charge at home anymore. I charge for free at work. The consumption isnt whats killing everyone, its the delivery fees. My neighbor's parents were gone all month and no one was at their house, they had their thermostat set to 65 and got billed over $700.00

Our gross charge for January from Pepco Maryland was exactly $0.206 per kWh.

DTE Energy in Southeastern Michigan charged Monthly Gross Energy $0.18 to $0.22 during 2024, for an annual average of $0.199 per kWh.

In Central California where we only have PG&E, we really take it in the a$$. We're on a TOU plan D and the best we get is $0.45 per kwh. I can switch to an Electric Home rate which is a little less off peak, but that really extends the peak pricing hours which is a killer here in the summer months. If it wasn't for our Solar system we installed in 2018(Which has now reached the break even point) we'd really be looking like crap on our annual electric charges.

If they do not have electric heat then there is something going on at their house. Our rates are 26 cents and I charge my Mach more than 30 kwhrs daily and my bill is less than $350. No electric heat or hot water.

My BGE gross rate was about 10.5¢ when I bought my Chevy Bolt in 2021. Now it is about 17.5¢. Yup… that’s a 66% increase in four years. I really wish I could use rooftop solar… but we (my neighbors, actually) have too many trees.

Varies between 11.3-14.6 cents / kWh, depending on how much I'm able to game the hourly pricing ?. The highest cost is the fixed 6 cents / kWh delivery charge plus other random fees they tack on to that portion of the bill.

We have lots of redwoods and shading issues. You just need more panels to offset the shading hit on your total production.

It might work… but there are a lot of trees. You can’t see our house on satellite view. Here’s what it looks like:

That's about the worst I've seen. You'd have to remove a few trees and trim the remaining ones which can be quite expensive.

In Auckland NZ I was paying NZ 28 cents per Kw =US 16 cents. I have now switched to the EV night rate and pay NZ 15.5 cents = USD 8.8 cents per Kw. NZ power is largely hydro generated, with some oil, gas, thermal and coal. No nuclear!
