no this is perm

“CNN —
A day after offering Canada a one-month reprieve on punishing, virtually across-the-board 25% tariffs, President Donald Trump has threatened new tariffs as soon as Friday on Canadian lumber and dairy products. It’s yet another twist in a serpentine trade policy that seems to shift on an hourly basis.”

As of the last 10 minutes it’s a 1 month and new ones are being threatened again.

somewhere along the line i read something that said on careful reading of the latest revocation of tariffs is that it might be more permanent than it sounded, at least for USMCA-compliant goods.

but stuff that doesn't follow the USMCA rules is still subject to tariffs... i think. that's the problem; there's so much thrashing on all this that no one really knows what is going on.

I subjected myself to find…

President Trump on Thursday exempted most goods from Canada and Mexico covered under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) from his 25% tariffs for the next month.

The tariffs went into effect earlier this week and will now be reinstated April”

It says the same thing.

Not sure where anyone would be getting tariffs have now been permanently removed. But I’m not willing to check deeper holes than Fox.

Also give it 10 minutes, there will be a new tariff threatened anyway.

“Flood the zone with bullshit” is exactly the plan. Even his cult members can’t keep track of what’s going on. Russian bots are mindless drones, what is the excuse for these humans who follow him?

Nothing says making America great again like raising prices on timber and, thus, new house construction.

Dairy has been a long bone of contention since before the first Canada - US free trade agreement in 1988. The Canadians have issues with one of the world's most heavily subsidized dairy industries exporting to their country. Canada's non-subsidized dairy industry utilizes supply management to maintain profitability, not government subsidies. In 2023 Canada imported approximately $526.3 million USD worth of highly subsidized US dairy while the USA imported approximately $204.1 USD worth of non-subsidized Canadian dairy. Yup, there's a definite imbalance there — but it's not in the direction a few think.

times article says this:

Two days after imposing sweeping tariffs on Canada and Mexico, President Trump on Thursday abruptly suspended many of those levies, sowing confusion with investors and businesses that depend on trade with the countries.

The president said he would allow products that are traded under the rules of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, the trade pact he signed in his first term, to avoid the stiff 25 percent tariffs he imposed just days ago on two of America’s largest trading partners.

The suspension effectively abandons many of the tariffs that Mr. Trump had placed on Canadian and Mexican products — levies he said were necessary to stem the flow of drugs and migrants into the United States.

His decision came a day after he said he would grant a 30-day reprieve to automakers, who had complained to the president that the levies would cause severe damage to U.S. carmakers. Mr. Trump implied that any relief would be short-lived, saying that other tariffs on Canadian and Mexican products are coming in April.

they make a distinction between the 'suspension' of these tariffs and the 30-day reprieve. i think it was on some social media post that some lawyer was saying that the language in the latest decision was an indefinite suspension of the tariff, rather than yet another delay.

Legally I’m not even sure if a tariff has ever even happened (of the current round of threats to start every month)! Who knows.

Threatening they will start next month is clearly the intention though.

It's been a great 5 years but this website has finally reached the Jump The Shark stage. Went from fun to aggravating with all the bickering and digs over politics. Even the mods seemed to have thrown their hands up. Time to back burner it for a while. Try not to kill each other. :computerrage:

When politics control everything in our lives for the first time in our lives, how could it not end up like this? Asking for a friend.
