Hi Folks,
We have a 2023 Premium GT with AWD. Been very happy with it. Our son, who lives in Texas (Waco to be exact) is thinking of buying an MME. He has more modest resources, and is looking at selects and possibly premium but cannot find any within a 100 mile range that have AWD. Does anyone have experience on performance and handling in the single motor MME's? Again, he would get AWD if he could, but they are simply not available anywhere near him.

TIA,

Steve

He should test drive the vehicle he's considering and decide if it meets his needs.

My standard range, rear wheel drive Mach-E had plenty of performance for me here in Phoenix. I wish the suspension was a lot better but that's was a flaw in all of the original 2021 job 1 cars and was improved later.

I have my second Mach e RWD er now and love it first was a 2022.25 job 2 and the current one is a 2023.75. the rear wheel drives very nice and you can have the bud flying around the corner. But you need to test it ur self to find out if you like it.

Mine is a 2024 premium extended range RWD. It handles well. If you aren’t doing serious off road stuff, RWD is enough. AWD’s actual utility over the FWD/RWD is only present in a few rare situations for the vast majority of drivers. AWD does not improve steering, stability, or braking. I have had an AWD sedan for 12 years. I can count on one hand the number of times that AWD seemed to matter.

We have a 2024 Select with standard range/RWD. Performance and handling are very nice. Frankly, I wouldn't buy an AWD, I would much rather have the extra miles per kwh than "performance" I really can't use on the streets. The only real advantage I see for AWD would be if someone is an area where a good part of the year there is snow, and maybe not even then.

For Texas the RWD is likely fine. The difference between the RWD and AWD would be noticeable in torrential rain, and other snowy wet or slippery conditions.

I also would not be as fast and some people care or don't care about that

I would go test drive one, good luck

I had a 21 rwd standard range battery for two years before getting the gt.
If you don't need awd for snow and such, the rwd is a great way to go. You get much better range and I had plently of range with standard battery, as I recall I was getting around 260 at a 90% charge. The several k savings not getting extended range is a plus. It doesn't have quite the same acceleration as the awd but it's more than quick enough.

I agree with most of these comments after 3 years with my 2022 RWD XR in Wisconsin. I never had one experience where I wished I had AWD. The lower initial cost and increased range made it a sound financial decision to go with RWD.

an additional added benefit of rwd. Should the car break down and need towing, it's a whole lot easier to deal with rwd than an awd

Unless you live in a snowy area, I doubt you would notice any difference at all.

I've had one instance in my '24 premium rwd where awd would have helped. I had just driven through wet castings from a sidewalk reconstruction project. The tires picked up a thin skin of mud. I was turning right onto a highway, accelerating to 55 mph. The car slid a bit and shuddered as I corrected. Awd would have provided better traction for that, but even that tiny scare isn't enough to desire a loss of range and increased expense.
As others have noted the rwd handles dry roads very well, and I've learned to be a little more cautious when accelerating on wet pavement around corners.

Our 22 premium was the first Awd car I’ve owned. I assumed that overall, it would be a safer more stable car. I have learned since that Awd is only active up to @ 15 mph and then cuts off. The only other time it engages is if the front wheels slip so even in snowy conditions it would be rare to happen if you are driving carefully. With that in mind, I guess I really see no particular advantage to Awd in normal driving conditions. If I had researched a bit more, I would not have gotten it, since the front motor is the only problem we have had with the car.

While attending the Beaufort Food and Wine festivals' "Vin de Mir" event last week, we were forced to go off roading at the local country club. We had to cross a gravel parking lot and park in a grassy area of recently mowed bermuda with the unwashed masses and their ICE relics. Our RWD did just fine despite the challenging terrain.....

I've been very happy with RWD traction and handling for 55K miles on our 2021 CR1. I was satisfied with the original Michelin A/S tires, but really like the CrossClimate2 replacements. They grip the road well in wet conditions to complement RWD. I think AWD would have little value to me, particularly with reduced range and the possibility of front drivetrain maintenance issues. Seems like AWD mostly pays off for 0-60 enthusiasts. For comparison, my wife's RWD Kia EV6 with less torque and original Kumho Crugen A/S tires will spin out pretty easily when accelerating in wet conditions.
