Just saw this. I think we’ve covered this before at the state tax level but now they want to put a similar road tax in lieu of gas tax on EV’s at the federal level. The proposal is for $250 annually for EV’s and $100 for hybrids. In comparison, a new car getting 28 mpg at 11,000 miles per year is paying about $73/year in federal gas tax to the highway fund. Sounds fair right?

We do need to contribute toward maintaining Federal highways and other highways receiving Federal highway aid. Most highway improvement projects receive 80% Federal funding.
At the same time, a $250/yr tax seems excessive. Will they be increasing the gas tax that has not been raised for quite a long time? That is unlikely.
There needs to be a weight factor included in the equation instead of one fee. Keep in mind that a standard range Mach - E weighs as much as a gasoline F-150. Our tax should be close to that of the equivalent weight vehicles using the most efficient ICE available for that vehicle (ie. the miles/gallon of the 4 or 6 cylinder engine; not the big V8). The weight of the traffic is a big factor in the wear and tear on highways. (If I recall correctly, 15,000 miles per year is considered the average miles driven by most cars.)
Above all we need to know how they calculated their tax proposal. Was it based on real research or "pulled out of the air" during a few drinks after work?

They mentioned that the trust fund for highways is drying up because of the increased efficiency of newer cars in mpg. The initial budget proposal had a $20 annual fee for ICE vehicles and a $200 fee for EV’S but that was scrapped due to Republican objections.
In regards to the weight issue, in comparison, the annual gas tax paid by an F-150 is about $110/year, according to the article.

Based on the average gas tax of $0.18/gallon at $250 annually that would be 1,388 gallons of gasoline. My old Acura avg. 24 mpg equating to 33,312 miles a year. I drive 16,000 annually (yah I track it). Just sayin'.

So should a Corolla have to pay more at registration than a Ram king cab because it uses less full for the same miles driven? Just sayin'.

I’m gonna go with “no.” IMO, ’they” want to penalize E.V. drivers because … , well, I’ll let you guys fill in the reasons.

Don't fall for the Republican anti-EV nonsense.

The last time the federal gas tax was raised was in October 1993. It was increased from 14.1 cents per gallon to 18.4 cents per gallon.

NOW Republicans are concerned about funding for the roads, eh?
Republicans rarely if ever vote for $$ for infrastructure......but now all of the sudden "How will we fund the roads?!?!"

For 32 YEARS republicans have done NOTHING regarding increased federal funding via the fed gas tax....but now.....now?!?!?!

EV buyers don't need to pay more.

I don't object as long as it's fair (based on similar weight ICE vehicles), and I'm not being double taxed at the State and Federal levels.
Maybe you didn’t read the article. The gist of it is that it isn’t really fair - it’s too high.
As far as being double taxed, you will be, most likely. Thirty-nine states have already adopted EV registration fees and some of those don’t really seem fair either.

I will be double taxed here in NJ. My other issue is that, with the gas tax you pay for per the amount of gas you use. With this tax, I'll pay the same amount if I drive 1000 miles a day, or 5 miles a day.

Yup, and New Jersey, a “blue” state, is in the $50 - $100 higher than equivalent gas taxes.

In Kentucky, a deep red state, I pay a $120 annual EV fee. It seems reasonable to me. I have no objections to paying my fair share for the roads I use. A $250 annual federal EV fee doesn’t strike me as fair, given the relatively low federal gasoline tax. Something in the $50 - $75 range seems justifiable.

There are already separate state and federal taxes on gas. It would make sense that there would be separate taxes at the state and federal level for EVs as well.

Right, and I was just pointing that out to @stoopid who was ok with the fee as long as he wasn’t being double-taxed.

I think most of us are ok with paying some sort of fee as long as it’s commensurate with comparable fees on gasoline powered vehicles. Should we be penalized for driving an EV?

Well now they are running on lowering taxes while uhhh trying to tariff literally everything.

So if you read between the lines Republicans are super into raising taxes on the common people these days.
