While it might be $1500 extra "on paper" for a hybrid RAV4, try finding one, and one without "ADM" (still a thing in my area for in-demand vehicles). My daughter tried last year and was unsuccessful.

We owned a Fusion Energi PHEV for 3 years. It was supposed to achieve 21 miles on electricity. In the winter, that was like 12. Almost never got 21.

We've decided to not go back to gas if we can help it, and that would include avoiding any PHEVs.

At the EV Expo in Seattle last year (and I'm sure elsewhere), Toyota had a big presence. Nearly all of that was touting Hybrids and PHEVs, not the bz4x (although it was sitting there in a corner). We have had 4 Toyota Hybrids since 2006 - 3 Priuses (Priuii?) and a Highlander. The Highlander was a big improvement over my gas-only MDX, almost doubling the mileage, but still sub-30 mpg. All the Priuses have been rather remarkable for gas powered cars, not sure a PHEV version would be preferrable. And while I am in the camp of "two drive systems is one too many", all of the vehicles were pretty low maintenance. Regardless, my wife and I now are fully electrified. We don't take a lot of trips outside our range, and being retired, don't need to rush our rare DC charges. I fully appreciate that will not apply to others. But moving to full electric wherever practical will (should) make cars simpler. I think Amazon even proved that with their delivery vehicles of all sizes and shapes.

Should have been done a long time ago. Toyota has proven their hybrid system is very reliable. The Sienna and Camry and Venza have been hybrid only now and they sell fine. People that want a cheaper option now have the Corolla Cross which is nearly the same size.

Our 2017 Chevy Volt had 50 mi of EV range and maintenance was minimal (e.g. oil change every 2 years). We sold it for an EV (Tesla) then the MME which we still have.

Many of our road trips though involve going to/through charging deserts and so we recently traded my i4 for a Lexus NX450h+ (PHEV). It gets 40 mi EV range reliably and can recharge it smaller HV battery on L2 in 2-3 hrs on L2 at home.

What this means for us is that it rarely switches to gas only and it's only 90 miles of gas usage since we returned from a 2300mi road trip in early April. On that trip we go 40mpg as we were able to full charge the HV battery on 110 overnight most nights. On gas only at freeway speeds it gets low 30's mpg.

For us range issues and DCFC charging are no longer an issue.

But for a vehicle that starts at just under $30K, an extra $3K isn’t a huge increase.
"Huge" is, of course, a relative term. A 10%+ price increase on a car in a highly competitive market might reduce unit sales by 20%. If not huge, the price increase will be at least significant to many buyers, as will the lost sales to Toyota.

Not a problem in the US.

Biden slapped a 100% tariff on them last year.

Even if he didn’t, it’d take a long time for Americans to trust a Chinese car manufacturer.

Most people won’t care if the price is right. No one really cares about China stealing our data anymore. Our data has been for sale by US companies to anyone and everyone already. When they banned TikTok at the beginning of the year, a big chunk of users willingly went over to a fully Chinese app instead.

Many of us remember the cheap YUGO vehicles. Those who had these "price is right" vehicles swear never again.

Yeah, but still half of buyers picked the gas model in recent years.

I know Toyota makes a great hybrid, but people are still scared of the extra complication of hybrid systems.

On paper for $1400 it seems like a no-brainer. Until it breaks.

Either way, getting rid of your most popular trim line of your most popular vehicle seems like a bad business move.

We shall see if they still sell half a million of these in 2026.
You clearly haven’t been paying attention to Toyota‘s sales of hybrid vehicles over the past 7 or 8 years. They’ve been steadily increasing year over year, even when there is a gas-only model within the lineup. Hybrid-only versions of the Sienna and Venza hasn’t hurt their overall sales. Toyota is a very conservative company. If they didn’t think people would embrace hybrid-only versions of their popular models, they wouldn’t have done it.

Toyota’s hybrid system is pretty bullet proof these days. They’ve had more than 25 years to prove their reliability and refine the technology. Plus the fact that Toyota is also putting their hybrid tech into their trucks, not just their SUVs. And it’s not like a bunch other manufacturers haven’t embraced hybrid technology as well. Ford has been doing hybrid trucks& SUVs for a while, too.

For the plug-in version (Prime), or just a regular hybrid? I know the PHEV version is as rare as a hen’s tooth… And yeah, scummy dealers are gonna do ADM for popular vehicles.

That’s for the low end LE trim. As you move up in the trim levels, that increase becomes less and less of a portion of the overall price. There’s no chance Toyota is going to see a 20% drop in sales.

I SO agree with this and it is what no one is talking about. BYD vehicles are still way too new. Give them a few years in owners hands and get back to me.
